Main Purpose of the Job To assist the manager in achieving the aims and objectives of the Statement of Purpose; to deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager; to support and manage staff to meet the needs of children and young people; to undertake direct work with children and young people, manage child protection concerns and complaints, alongside other professionals to achieve optimum outcomes and provide supervision and support to senior staff in accordance with National Minimum Standards. Duties & Responsibilities – Meet the needs of children Ensure each young person has an allocated key worker. Ensure each staff member is aware of each child’s placement plan and their responsibilities for its implementation. Attend childcare reviews and planning meetings to provide information and achieve best outcomes for young people. Undertake direct work with young people and act as an appropriate role model. Assist in developing systems in which young people are consulted about the quality of the care they receive. Maintain accurate written records in logs, continuation sheets and files to monitor and evaluate care. Work in partnership with parents, carers and other professionals to safeguard and promote the welfare of young people. Chair children’s meetings and facilitate consultation with young people generally. Act as an appropriate adult at PACE interviews. Duties & Responsibilities – Manage a staff team Provide managerial control and direction in relation to staff duties and responsibilities. Assist with the recruitment and retention of staff, including induction training for new staff into the home. Supervise new starters during their probationary period. Develop a management style that balances control with staff decision‑making opportunities. Take responsibility for planning shifts and ensuring their smooth running when on duty. Provide consultation and informal advice and support to staff in day‑to‑day matters. Offer 1:1 supervision to staff in line with National Minimum Standards. Identify and progress individual training and development needs of staff within their personnel development plans. Undertake annual appraisal of staff. Address issues relating to conduct and competence of staff. Conduct management investigations when required. Assist the Registered Manager in promoting personal and professional development through appropriate delegation of duties. Contribute to team and staff meetings to facilitate good communication and staff development. Ensure staff work within the Home’s policies, procedures and National Minimum Standards requirements. Duties & Responsibilities – Develop systems for resource allocation Ensure adequate staffing levels that meet the needs of the Home. Manage budgets effectively and monitor use of finances, including petty cash returns and weekly attendance records. Ensure company vehicles are clean and regularly maintained. Monitor closely the building fabric (fixtures, amenities and grounds) and take remedial action where necessary. Duties & Responsibilities – Promote efficient operation of the Home Develop, in consultation with young people and staff, routines for all aspects of child care. Clarify expectations in maintaining the Home in a clean and orderly condition. Create rotas that fit children’s needs and allow proper handovers between shifts. Ensure an appropriate and adequate reporting and recording system to comply with National Minimum Standards. Attend to all administration issues and provide weekly management information reports to HQ. Duties & Responsibilities – General Responsibilities Assist the Registered Manager in implementation of all aspects of the Statement of Purpose. Contribute to devising, implementing and evaluating changes with front‑line staff to continually improve services, systems and standards. Deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager. Drive company vehicles – subject to policies and procedures. Work on a rota basis according to the needs of young people. Ensure resources are allocated appropriately and financial records are accurately maintained. Receive supervision in line with National Minimum Standards and take responsibility for personal development and training needs. Carry out other reasonable tasks directed by the Registered Manager. Person Specification – Deputy Manager Essential / Desirable Qualifications Secondary education with good standard of literacy and numeracy. NVQ Level 3 in Caring for Children and Young People (or equivalent). Current driving licence (preferred but not essential). Knowledge & Skills Knowledge of National Minimum Standards. Awareness of Equal Opportunities/ADP issues. Knowledge of the Children Act and other relevant legislation. Team building skills. Supervision skills. Ability to manage teams effectively. Verbal and written communication skills. Understanding of the needs of BESD children, including managing challenging behaviour. In‑depth knowledge of ‘Every Child Matters’. Excellent organisational skills. Ability to motivate and enthuse staff. Counselling skills. Training skills. Drugs Awareness Training. Experience 1 year of relevant supervisory experience. 12 months experience working in a residential setting with young people with challenging behaviour.
