We’re looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Ground Engineering team in Plymouth. What can we offer? We work for leading United Kingdom & Ireland (UK&I) and international clients and have a wide range of commissions across all sectors, some typical examples of current and past projects include National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade where our teams support the overhaul of electricity distribution infrastructure across England and Wales; H2Teesside which aims to be the largest blue hydrogen production facility in the UK; High Speed Rail and Network Rail’s Control Point 7 programme of works to operate, maintain and renew the mainline rail infrastructure. With defence work being high on the UK Government’s agenda AECOM has also been working for several defence clients. There are also overseas work opportunities including work for the Royal Commission of Al Ula and Neom. Our Ground Engineering Practice covers all aspects of Ground Engineering serving a wide range of end markets including: Energy Rail Highways Water Development Defence Nuclear Sectors Ports & Marine You will be joining an established team of Ground Engineers within AECOM’s southern UK region, will be based in the AECOM Plymouth Office and will work closely with colleagues from across the UK & Ireland. Job Duties Delivery: We require ambitious team players with the technical and commercial skills, knowledge and experience to manage tasks and assist the team with the delivery of projects, ensuring technical quality and adherence to budget and programme. Provide Expertise: Active input into team/client technical review meetings, being prepared to own decisions and put forward alternative ideas and concepts. Commercial: Maintaining high levels of client satisfaction, being responsive to client requirements, and supporting with the development of fee proposals and bids for internal and external clients. Mentoring: Owning personal and professional development and on the job mentoring of junior staff. The position will suit a candidate who has some experience in applying geotechnical design, can work with a high degree of independence, can support junior team members, can budget/programme deliverables and provide the geotechnical input to projects from desk study/feasibility through to ground investigation and interpretation to final design including preparation of specifications, interpretive reports, construction drawings and design reports. Qualifications BEng / MEng in Civil Engineering or BSc and/or MSc in Geotechnical Engineering. Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) status is desirable, or you have a plan and are on track to achieve this. The team will provide the necessary support to achieve this. Good knowledge of UK ground conditions and ground investigation practices. Demonstrable understanding of current design codes, standards, and best practices in geotechnical design, but also open to exploring new methods and innovations. Ability to collaborate closely in project delivery, work winning and maintaining high levels of client satisfaction. Knowledge of typical ground conditions interpretation/parametric assessment and correlation methods applicable to common geotechnical design problems. Familiarity with data management software (e.g. gINT, Open Ground) would be advantageous. Experience in geotechnical design (e.g. earthworks, foundations, retaining structures, slope stabilisation) with strong analytical skills and some experience in the use of relevant design software (e.g. Slope/W, Wallap). Familiarity with the production of geotechnical analysis and design packages, including drawings, risk assessments, specifications and design reports. Application of CDM Regulations / Safety in Design in a design and ground investigation environment. Experience with standards and processes in specialised fields (e.g. highways, railways) is desirable. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write clear and concise technical reports and documents. Experience in the design, specification and management of ground investigation (remotely and in the field). Clean driving licence. Candidates should be willing to travel throughout the UK.
