Brief Description You will help keep our nation moving every day by working outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely for passengers and freight. About The Role (External) Operatives can specialise in a range of disciplines. For this position you will become a specialist in the following discipline: Track – maintain, inspect and repair the track network (Permanent Way), including rails, sleepers and ballast. Offtrack – maintain, inspect and repair the land alongside the track, including vegetation management and drainage. Undertrack – maintain, inspect and repair equipment under the track, focusing on joinery, lubrication and welding. Distribution & Plant – keep power flowing through electrified rails, working on nuts, bolts and cables. Overhead Lines – work with high‑voltage systems at height, measuring, adjusting and repairing cables. All operatives work outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. Demanding manual work, transport of kit across tricky terrain and proximity to moving trains require safety focus, respect for rules and strong teamwork. Your Skills Matter Team‑working – work closely with the team to deliver safe and efficient work. Communication – strong communication skills for safety and effectiveness. Proactive planning – punctuality, equipment readiness and anticipation of team needs. Working under pressure – remain calm while operating outdoors with trains nearby. Following rules and instructions – understand and respect rules, and challenge unsafe situations. Willingness to learn – continuously develop technical and non‑technical competencies. Additional Information Shifts – changing shift pattern including days, nights and weekends. Outdoor working – comfortable working in all weather conditions. Safe working – subject to drug & alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight examination. Driving – a Category B driving licence is required to operate Network Rail vehicles. Commute – must be within a 60‑minute commute of the location.
