Advocate £12,147 for 17.5 hours post, Location: Belper, Derbyshire. Deaf-ibly Women is looking to recruit a deaf, deafblind or a hard of hearing woman to work as a part-time Advocate to support and empower deaf women to be heard through quality, independent advocacy. They will hold (or be willing to work towards within 12 months) the Diploma in Independent Advocacy (City & Guilds Level 3 or 4). As part of their role, they will also be prepared to travel across Derby/shire and Nottingham/shire. Deaf-ibly Women believe that all deaf women have the right to be heard and respected, making their own choices in decisions about themselves. This vacancy is open to deaf, deafblind and hard‑of‑hearing women only (Exempt under the Equality Act 2010, pursuant to schedule 9, Part 1). Role and Responsibilities Represent deaf women’s wishes and act accordingly to their instructions whilst enabling them to express their views, understand their rights, make choices and access the services they need. Work with clients, always taking their side and championing social justice. Work directly with clients in the community and institutional settings. Hold (or be willing to work towards within 12 months) the Diploma in Independent Advocacy (City & Guilds Level 3 or 4). Follow all DW policies and procedures, including managing risks, safeguarding, confidentiality and accurate record keeping. Treat everyone fairly and with respect, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. Build positive working relationships with colleagues, clients and partners. Manage their caseload effectively and prioritise tasks whilst meeting deadlines and staying calm under pressure. Promote clients’ confidence and independence through self‑advocacy. Communicate effectively with a diverse range of deaf women, including those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mental health needs. Work both independently and as part of a team. Share learning with other team members as well as undertake shadowing opportunities. Take part in training and continuous professional development. Cover colleagues’ work during absence (e.g. holidays or sickness). Contribute and support new projects as required. Have access to transport and be prepared to travel across Derby/shire and Nottingham/shire. Personal Specification – Essential Criteria Qualifications and Knowledge Diploma in Independent Advocacy (City & Guilds Level 3 or 4) or alternatively will complete the course within 12 months of appointment. Level 2 (or higher) qualification in British Sign Language (BSL). Knowledge of Deaf culture, community and communication methods. Knowledge of data protection and GDPR requirements. An understanding of advocacy principles, equality, diversity and inclusion. Knowledge of relevant legislation & guidance, including the Care Act 2014, Safeguarding and confidentiality. Understanding of the social model of disability and issues affectingdeaf anddeafblindwomen. Experience being deaf. working with deaf people. supporting individuals to express their views, make choices and access services. managing a personal caseload and working to deadlines. maintaining accurate, confidential records and reports. MS 365, including Word and Excel. Skills and Abilities strong communication skills, including the ability to use British Sign Language (BSL). good organisational and time‑management skills and is able to prioritise work and meet deadlines. ability to work both independently and as part of a team. ability to identify and manage risks appropriately and promptly. Interpersonal skills to liaise and network with a range of professionals, agencies and community partners. commitment to professional boundaries, confidentiality and safeguarding.
