The Role of the Deputy Shop Manager Commercially aware and constantly seeking new business opportunities, deputy shop managers motivate their teams and create a safe and energised work environment. They set high standards, drive results, and are accountable for their shop’s performance. Often the only paid staff member, they work closely with Shop Managers and volunteers, delegating responsibilities while ensuring excellent customer service and community engagement. Key Skills & Competencies Ability to support the development of an inclusive and diverse team that can maintain day‑to‑day shop activities. Commercial awareness and support of effective retail processes and strong merchandising. Collaboration with the Shop Manager and building positive relationships with colleagues; providing excellent customer service and engaging with local community organisations. Resilience to everyday pressures, managing conflicting demands, and seeking support when needed. Financial literacy – interpreting basic financial reports, monitoring budgets and maintaining shop administrative systems.
