As a Senior Engineer – HVDC Mechanical System Design, you will enable the Energy Transition through advanced HVDC converter mechanical and structural design. You will lead and contribute to R&D programs aligned with GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business, including HVDC & FACTS, Power Conversion and Storage, and Wind, and collaborate with U.S. Government Agencies such as the Department of Energy. The technologies developed under these programs will be matured and transitioned into products to drive breakthrough impact for our company, our customers, and our society. Roles and Responsibilities Lead diverse teams and contribute individually at an intermediate expertise level in the development and application of advanced technology solutions to GE Vernova products and services using analytics, modeling, simulations and advanced testing methods. Validate performance of developed solutions through simulations, lab‑scale and full prototype scale testing. Document technology and results through patent applications, technical reports, and publications. Ensure that solutions adopted are both technically appropriate and that GE Vernova has freedom to utilize these solutions. Transfer technology to engineering teams in GE Vernova to be included in next generation products and services. Stay current with advances in system technologies to seek out new ideas and applications. Work in a team environment with colleagues across GE Vernova including other GE Grid Solutions businesses, Advanced Research Center and partners from industry, academia, and government agencies. Required Qualifications Doctorate degree in an Engineering field with advanced and demonstrated years of experience in design, development, testing and validation of mechanical system OR Master’s degree in an Engineering field with extensive hands on experience in design, development and validation of mechanical systems. Advanced experience in building full scale equipment or hardware prototype for testing and validation of complex physical systems including HVDC converter valves, high voltage substations equipment, generation plants, industrial plants, systems. Advanced and demonstrated years of experience with mechanical design simulation tools, including 3D modeling, mechanical forces and stress analysis. Proficiency in Ansys, SolidWorks, Catia, Abaqus, AutoCAD, MATLAB, Mathcad, Python or similar engineering software. An exceptional background in power hardware components design (converter valves, power modules, busbars, reactors, transformers, metallic supporting structure, etc.). Relevant experience in HVDC systems, including specifying, designing, testing or commissioning HVDC stations components such as power transformers, reactors, filters, converter valves, cooling plants. Familiar with stress calculations including thermal, vibration, seismic stress analysis. Ability and willingness to travel 10% of the time, including international, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies. Desired Characteristics Relevant experience in designing layout of HVDC converter valve hall or metallic structure of HVDC converters. Significant and demonstrated years of experience in designing the packaging layout of high power converters modules or metallic supporting structure of power converters components. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems. Demonstrated ability to lead programs / projects. Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs. Established project management skills. For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between £62,200.00 and £93,300.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas.
