To facilitate a 3-day programme designed to attract engineers into the South Wales semiconductor industry. Proactively engage with programme participants (professionals), answer questions they may have about the technology/industry, support and supervise the teaching of group activities and discussions, carry out teaching-related administrative duties as required, and accompany participants between locations (bus transportation will be provided for travel between Cardiff and Swansea/Newport). Teaching contributions will be provided and overseen by an academic member of staff. Key Duties Attend pre-programme meetings to be briefed on the content/activities and backgrounds of participants Self-preparation of teaching materials and activities prior to the programme delivery During the programme, deliver teaching materials associated with group activities (e.g. content from the Introduction to Compound Semiconductor Electronics live course). Includes communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to participant interventions; responding to questions. Supervise programme participants and support their needs. Participate actively as a member of the teaching/delivery team. Engage participants in verbal feedback about their experience of the programme; reflect on programme delivery; and attend a post-programme meeting to share insights and put forward suggestions for improvements. Carry out administrative duties as required – e.g. class record keeping. Deal with reactive requests such as those relating to teaching, supervising students and administrative tasks. Person Specification Qualifications and Education Postgraduates, or those with equivalent applied/professional experience, are particularly welcome to apply as this role may suit the skills developed over your studies or work. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Proven teaching ability, ideally via a teaching qualification. Communication and Team Working Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with participants (professionals) and staff. Proven verbal communication and rapport-building skills. Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline. Evidence of ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work. Additional Information The target audience for this programme will be e ngineers who have an interest in changing career and may consider the South Wales semiconductor industry. For example, mid-career engineers and/or recent graduates who have completed an industrial placement. The engineers we recruit may have a variety of backgrounds/experience. As well as electrical and mechanical engineers, we’ll be looking for those with experience in cyber security (cyber engineers), facilities management, health & safety, equipment maintenance & repair etc., as these are all roles required by the South Wales semiconductor industry. The 3-day programme will provide participants with a solid understanding and experience of the industry and the employers operating across South Wales. Following their attendance we hope this programme will generate a healthy interest in this growing sector, with many participants going on to apply for jobs. This is the overall aim of the programme. The intention is to pilot the programme in March ’26 (dates tbc), with up to 20 participants, and then run further cohorts from late spring ’26 onwards. The pilot programme is being developed under the CSconnected Strength in Places Fund (SIPF) project, and the activity is being managed by Cardiff University’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Unit.
