Locum Consultant in Ophthalmology

We are looking for an individual to fill this six month locum post within the Ophthalmology Department at St James's University Hospital. This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Medical Retina team. It is based at St James's Hospital but may include working at other LTHT sites when required. The successful applicant should possess accreditation in Ophthalmology by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) or equivalent. Senior level experience in Medical Retina will be required. Provision for support to attain CESR qualification can be discussed and arranged if needed. Applicants should have established skills in Ophthalmology, excellent communication and team‑working skills, and a strong commitment to teaching and service development. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is desirable. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share. Main duties of the job This is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Ophthalmologist, with special interests in Medical Retina. The post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Medical Retina team and will be based at St James's Hospital, with clinics also held at Seacroft and Wharfedale Hospital. Key responsibilities include: Out‑patient clinics Supervision of patients Contributing to specialist multi‑disciplinary team meetings Linking with consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the department and across the Trust Contributing to research, teaching, and new developments within the department Participating in the undergraduate teaching programme for the School of Medicine, University of Leeds Collaborating with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds Working with colleagues to contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in Ophthalmology in the Local Education and Training Board About us Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is part of the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT), a collaboration of the NHS hospital trusts from across West Yorkshire and Harrogate working together to provide the best possible care for our patients. The department has 20 other subspecialist consultants and trains ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region, recruiting 5 Trust Doctors across various sub‑specialties. Person Specification Clinical, Academic and Personal Skills – Essential All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors Well organised, skilled in time management, effective interpersonal skills, and ability to relate to and work within a team Additional Requirements – Essential Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted for trainees (if currently in a UK training programme or have references authorised by the DMD/CD) Qualifications – Essential MBBS (or equivalent) MRCOphth / FRCOphth or equivalent qualification Experience – Essential Successfully completed a recognised training programme in Ophthalmology High level of clinical experience and competence in Medical Retina Completed at least 4 years of higher surgical training in ophthalmology Completed at least 12 months of Medical Retina subspecialty training Competent in retinal laser procedures, intravitreal treatment procedures and managing Medical Retina conditions Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances Experience – Desirable Previous Fellowship in Medical Retina Competence in cataract surgery is desirable Eligibility, Fitness to Practice, and Language Skills – Essential Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice Eligibility to work in the UK Up to date and fit to practise safely Any attachments will be accessible after you click to apply.
