Based in our community rehabilitation centre in Crystal Palace, you'll join a passionate, specialist MDT that’s dedicated to delivering exceptional care. The post is part‑time (0.5), onsite over 3 days. Days and exact hours can be discussed, however working on a Thursday is essential due to existing MDT meetings and commitments. The case load is varied: adults and children, acquired or congenital, primary and established, unilateral and multi‑limb loss. The amputee rehabilitation pathway at GSTT includes the acute and sub‑acute amputee rehabilitation unit. You will forge close working relationships with the lead physiotherapists. If you would like to know more or arrange a site visit, please contact: Primary contact: Amy Jones, clinical lead and head of community amputee services Secondary contact: Rachael Lovegrove, clinical lead occupational therapist Main duties of the job Responsible for leading and providing an efficient and effective specialist physiotherapy service for people considering amputation and those with acquired or congenital lower limb loss referred to the team. You will maintain and develop the clinical support, education and service links with referring acute trusts and be an expert physiotherapist in prosthetic rehabilitation in the South East London area. Responsible for the clinical management and development of the physiotherapy team based Bowley Close. You will contribute nationally to specialist amputee and physiotherapy organisations and education events. Work jointly with counselling and specialist MDT to develop MDT policies, protocols, guidelines and standards to promote best practice for the service both uni professional and MDT. Lead physiotherapy specific areas of amputee and prosthetic clinical practice development, governance, service improvement and the development of care pathways. About us The job is based at the Bowley Close Rehabilitation Centre, Crystal Palace. The post is an onsite role with no weekly remote working allocated. Bowley Close Rehabilitation Centre is the main site for Guys and St. Thomas's regional specialist rehabilitation (RSR) services which includes regional prosthetic services, regional orthotics, wheelchairs and assistive communication services. Other RSR services based on different sites include the amputee rehabilitation unit, orthotics at Kings College Hospital, diabetic foot clinic & other community based orthotics clinics and patient appliances at Guy's and St. Thomas. The services are led by head of regional specialist rehabilitation, service manager, assistance service managers and supported by administrative teams. We sit within the integrated local services directorate. The prosthetics MDT assesses and provides rehabilitation new and established patients with lower limb, upper limb and multiple limb loss; acquired or congenital. Our services support both adults and children. Pre amputation and second opinion specialist consultations are also provided. Job responsibilities Duties and responsibilities Clinical and professional Responsible for all aspects of physiotherapy assessment and treatment of outpatient amputees (acquired and congenital) and patients referred for pre‑amputation consultation to the regional amputee and prosthetic centre. The client group includes all ages from birth to the elderly; primary and established amputees. Responsible for the provision of specialist physiotherapy and patient caseload management the complexity of patients varies and includes multi‑limb loss patients and complex rehabilitation needs due to associated pathologies. Responsible for and ensure quality of intervention given and opportunity for staff development by providing specialist advice and expertise. Use clinical reasoning and specialist skills and knowledge to ensure the best ongoing treatment for all patients. Provide expert advice and expertise to other physiotherapist and students in the team to ensure equitable levels of standards of care between team members. Carry own caseload of amputees likely to be patients with the highly complex physical, social and psychological needs. Professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including knowledge of indications and precautions chosen techniques/equipment provision in line with national and trust clinical guidelines, protocols and pathways where they exist. Prioritise own and teams clinical caseload considering clinical service priorities using specialist and managerial knowledge to underpinning decisions. Communicate timely and effectively with clinical lead & head of community amputee pathway and service manager. Make expert recommendations to the Consultant and Rehabilitation medicine or AHP equivalent and clinical lead of service and prosthetists regarding initial prosthetic prescription or related changes to prescription identifying clinical reasoning for prescription choice. Be responsible for the physiotherapy staff clinical recommendations regarding prosthetic prescription and provide specialist advice and guidance. Provide physiotherapy to the visiting ward round service at Kings College Hospital or other hospitals as required in order to best support the ward‑based physiotherapists and patients needs. Lead the visiting ward around the Kings College Hospital in the absence of the head of service (or equivalent) or at their request. Responsible for the physiotherapy assessment and treatment of people considering lower limb amputation providing professional opinion regarding their likely functional outcome and prosthetic use. Facilitate these patients to have opportunity to meet other patients having undergone the same level amputation and provide contact details for specialist amputee support organisations. Be the expert in physiotherapy for this patient cohort based on theoretical knowledge and experience. Be available to frequent requests for specialist advice and guidance by colleagues, junior team members and other healthcare professionals both within and external to the trust. Person Specification Qualifications/Education Degree in physiotherapy Evidence of continued professional development to M level including post graduate courses relevant to speciality or clear evidence of working at this level Full member of relevant national specialist interest Group (BACPAR) MSc/MPhil/PhD in relevant topic(s) Leadership training Knowledge, Skills and experience Advanced and significant post graduate experience in physiotherapy Expert physiotherapy skills in specialty in acute and rehabilitative care (trauma and orthopaedics, polytrauma, paediatrics, congenital skeletal deficiencies, multi limb loss) Significant Band 7 level experience of working within amputee rehabilitation specialties in both inpatient and outpatient environments, including management of highly complex patients with complex cases relevant to specialty Advanced skills in gait analysis fit and gait deviations, problem solving of socket fit and wound management In‑depth and specialist knowledge and experience working with a wide range of prosthetic componentry with understanding of prescription reasoning Proven ability to adapt rehabilitation skills for self and physiotherapy team with new prosthetic componentry In‑depth knowledge and experience in Clinical governance - audit, risk management, evidence based practise, user involvement Research experience Advanced use of IT including database development and data analysis Leadership, Communication and relationship skills Highly developed communication skills with ability to deal with highly sensitive, emotional, conflicting and contentious matters. Significant experience in physiotherapy staff and student management and development High level of understanding of roles of team members and scope of practice within RSR and directorate Proven experience in motivational and negotiation skills Ability to cope with stress and frequent interruptions throughout working day Understands varied wider demands of the prosthetic physiotherapy, MDT and amputee pathway service in SE London Able to give and receive constructive criticism.
