Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Location: NorthumberlandContract: Full-time (term time only) or part-time negotiableStart date: January 2026 Purpose of the Role To work collaboratively with teachers to support high-quality teaching, learning, and behaviour across the school. The HLTA will lead learning with individuals, small groups, and whole classes when required, ensuring all students, particularly those with SEND and additional needs—are supported to make strong progress. Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning Support Deliver learning activities to whole classes during teacher absence or as part of planned PPA cover. Lead small-group interventions across Key Stages 3 and 4, focusing on literacy, numeracy, and wider curriculum support. Support teachers with planning and adapting lessons to meet diverse learner needs. Provide targeted support for students with SEND, EAL, and SEMH needs, following EHCPs and individual learning plans. Assessment & Feedback Monitor student progress during lessons and intervention sessions. Assess student responses and provide clear, actionable feedback. Support teachers with record-keeping, data entry, and evidence gathering for assessment and reporting. Behaviour & Pastoral Support Promote positive behaviour in line with the school’s behaviour policy. Use de‑escalation strategies and restorative approaches where appropriate. Support vulnerable pupils through mentoring, check‑ins, and pastoral interventions. Contribute to safeguarding by identifying concerns and reporting promptly. Curriculum & Classroom Support Prepare, adapt, and organise learning materials and classroom resources. Assist with the planning and delivery of enrichment activities, trips, and clubs. Supervise students during non‑teaching times (break, lunch, transitions) as required. Professional Responsibilities Work collaboratively with teachers, SENDCo, pastoral teams and external agencies. Attend CPD sessions and whole‑school training to maintain HLTA standards. Uphold the values, ethos, and safeguarding responsibilities of the school. Person Specification Essential Experience working in a secondary school environment. Strong understanding of the KS3 and KS4 curriculum. Effective behaviour management and communication skills. Ability to lead learning independently with confidence. A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. Level 3+ in childcare or relevant degree Desirable Experience delivering subject‑specific interventions. Knowledge of SEND strategies and evidence‑based approaches.
