Parenteral Nutrition and Surgery Lead Dietitian Join the NHS to apply for the Parenteral Nutrition and Surgery Lead Dietitian role. Job Summary The position can be offered as a 9‑month full‑time (5 days per week) or a 12‑month contract (4 days per week). This maternity‑leave cover supports the acute team at Homerton, working closely with the surgical team across general and bariatric surgery and with the wider MDT. Main duties Lead on best practice in parenteral nutrition and oversee surgical wards for parenteral and enteral nutrition. Ensure adherence to national policies and NICE guidelines. Support the Nutrition Steering Committee and Trust‑wide patient safety on parenteral nutrition. Collaborate with the Critical Care lead dietitian to supervise and lead junior team members. Provide advanced dietetic assessment on patients with diverse presentations and highly complex physical and psychological conditions, developing and delivering individualized treatment programmes in line with evidence‑based guidelines. Lead on patients with complex nutrition needs across all hospital areas including ITU, medical and surgical wards in the absence of other senior staff. Jointly lead research, development, clinical policies and pathways in relevant areas. Deputise for the Professional Lead for the Service as required. Provide clinical supervision and guidance for junior staff within the acute dietetic team. Co‑ordinate dietetic student training within the acute team, liaising with Homerton dietetic service and higher education institutions. Person Specification Essential education / qualifications HCPC registered Post‑registration course(s) in relevant areas of motivation/counselling skills. Desirable Member of the BDA. Essential skills / abilities Ability to attend and contribute to high‑level MDT discussions and lead the Nutrition Support team meeting weekly alongside colleagues. Ability to work effectively as part of an MDT and as an autonomous practitioner. Effective communication during ward rounds, team meetings and with carers/family on highly sensitive feeding issues. Good oral and written communication skills with diverse backgrounds and people with cognitive impairment or communication difficulties. Essential experience Typical 3–5 years post‑registration experience or demonstrated competence in parenteral and enteral nutrition at a high level in an acute setting. High level of experience with patients with multiple pathologies, undertaking specialist assessment, treatment plans and discharge plans. High level of experience with enteral tube feeding and nutrition support. Essential knowledge Updated knowledge of artificial nutrition support and IV nutrition. Extensive specialist knowledge of enteral feeding, including ethics of initiating and withdrawing nutrition support.
