Job information 04/12/2025 Job Id: 1155 School/Department: Estates & Facilities Management Work Arrangement: Full Time (On site) Contract Type: Permanent Salary per annum (£): £31,637 - £36,130 Closing Date: 05/01/2026 Overview The Engineering and Maintenance team provide a reactive and planned programme of works for every building within the university, working in collaboration with other university departments and outside partners to deliver an outstanding, world-class service. You will directly line manage the mechanical maintenance team in one of the zones. This involves supervising allocation of planned and reactive maintenance around the university campus. You will manage parts procurement and ensure stock levels are maintained. You will also monitor staffing levels and ensure there is adequate cover for essential maintenance at all times. A good technical knowledge and the ability to advise others will be expected. IT literacy is essential to carry out all required activities. As a visible uniformed representative of the university a professional, positive, approachable, customer focused attitude is essential as interaction with students, staff, visitors, contractors and members of the public will be an important part of this role. You will be expected to assist and lead fault finding for complex technical issues which occur on a large university campus with a varied building stock. A working technical knowledge of current guidelines and standards such as Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) is essential, together with a strong knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation. You will assist the University with its obligations to meet the requirements of the Estates & Facilities Integrated Management System (Comprising ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 500001). Main duties and responsibilities Supervise a team of mechanical maintenance technicians. Ensure work is carried out in a timely, effective manner complying with current legislation and guidelines. Allocate work to appropriate team members or support as required to ensure work is completed within specific deadlines. Responsible for the completion of a rolling program of planned maintenance activities throughout the year, ensuring the completion of work task details into Planon. Use skills and experience to support team. Technicians are required to complete jobs independently, but the supervisor will provide assistance, advice and technical input to resolve problems and ensure timely completion. Work in compliance with the university's policies, procedures, current legislation and health and safety standards. Assist the mechanical engineering manager to plan preventative maintenance tasks to ensure all work is completed according to programme. Order parts and equipment to ensure a stock level of consumables is maintained enabling planned and reactive maintenance to be achieved. To assist the mechanical engineering manager to coordinate and maintain records of annual leave and sickness absence for the team, ensuring adequate staffing levels, monitor and advise on team performance. Prioritise jobs in order of urgency, making decisions on methods to be used and sequence of actions. Conduct on site diagnostics and undertake mechanical maintenance of services using a range of tools and techniques. This includes pressure systems, HVAC, compressors, steam generation, domestic and commercial gas including all associated testing and completion of relevant certificates. The work is split between planned and reactive maintenance. Liaise with contractors who are working on the university premises to ensure they are carrying out work in accordance with required timescales and university health and safety standards. Provide advice about solutions to technical tasks using in-depth knowledge of the university and its infrastructure. Maintain good relationships with key contacts in University departments and communicate with them about work being undertaken and give regular updates on progress. Respond to requests for assistance outside normal working hours in accordance with the departments call out procedures. This role is included in a formal call out rota to provide emergency responses across the university estate. Participation in this rota will be determined by the university in accordance with the on call provisions. Criteria Essential or desirable Stage(s) assessed at A time served apprentice educated to HNC level or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering. Interview The ability to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of mechanical installations as well as the products and services available for maintaining these. Interview Experience of using a range of IT systems such as Google applications, MS Word and Excel, email, electronic calendars and Planon. Interview Ability to demonstrate a high standard of customer service to a wide range of customers. Interview Experience of teamwork with the ability to demonstrate positive contributions to the day to day work and goals of the team. Interview Ability to prioritise and respond effectively to changing and sometimes conflicting demands and an ability to competently assess and organise resources, in order to complete work activities within deadlines. Interview Ability to develop and produce appropriate viable solutions and designs for specialist works to meet customer requirements. Desirable Interview A working knowledge of current Health and Safety legislation relevant to the job role and the ability to apply this knowledge to the day to day work.
