Job Description Job Title: Associate Technician Department: Engineering Reports To: Engineering Laboratory Supervisor FLSA Status: Salary, Non-Exempt Grade: TBD Location: Lancaster, PA Summary The Associate Technician position is entry level. The Associate Technician is expected to assist other technicians and engineers with “hands‑on” fabrication and testing of hardware in the laboratory. The Associate Technician will be assigned a mentor who will teach and train them to use the equipment in the laboratory with the objective of becoming able to work independently. Essential Duties and Responsibilities General Fabrication Skills: Develop the following fabrication skills. Machining: Demonstrate the ability to machine or modify simple components made from aluminum, copper or steel using a milling machine or lathe. Involves drilling holes, tapping holes, fly cutting, grinding and installing miscellaneous hardware such as heli‑coils, threaded inserts, etc. Soldering: Demonstrate the ability to solder components together using a torch, hot plate or oven and understand the flux and solder processes needed to bond aluminum and copper components neatly and effectively. Brazing: Brazing components together using a torch or furnace; select appropriate process when required. Welding: Understand the welding process and weld design. Occasionally perform welding of components. Leak Checking: Effectively leak‑check hardware using a helium mass spectrometer in vacuum, sniffing and bagged modes. Electrical Skills: Perform minor electrical work to set up tests, such as wiring heaters for thermal tests, soldering fixtures, setting up variacs, watt‑meters or measuring current and resistance to calculate power. All these skills must be performed safely to prevent injury to self and others. Hardware Assembly: Fabricate hardware and prototypes per instructions or engineering drawings to meet requirements and be aesthetically “craftsman” like. Interpret Drawings: Read and interpret drawings per geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards (ANSI/ASME Y14.5‑1994). Quality: Follow ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality standards, obtain first‑article inspection (FAI) certifications, prepare and fill out travelers, follow fabrication procedures, obtain certificates of conformance (C of C) and file information appropriately. On‑Time Delivery: Complete and deliver work to the customer (internal or external) by committed dates. Cleanliness: Maintain a clean, organized work area; return tools to original locations and lock them, dispose or store excess materials and fixtures after each project. Laboratory Testing: Set up and conduct tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate performance against specifications. Analyze test data, report results, and provide recommendations for test method changes. Qualifications Education and/or Experience: 2‑year technical degree from an accredited trade school, college or university with less than 5 years’ work experience. Language Skills: Read, analyze, and interpret general technical procedures and instructions; write reports, business correspondence, and procedures; present information and respond to inquiries. Mathematical Skills: Apply basic mathematics—addition, subtraction, multiplication, division— to tasks such as calculating heat‑pipe performance, determining test results, reliability and validity, analysis of variances, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in low‑standardized situations; interpret written, oral, diagram or schedule instructions. Computer Skills: Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. Physical Demands The employee regularly required to talk or hear; stand, walk, sit and use hands to finger, handle or feel. Occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, ability to adjust focus. Requires occasional travel by airplane and automobile to vendors, facilities, repair equipment and deliver hardware.
