Brief Description You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. As a technician you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. Railway experience is essential. About The Role (External) Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team’s operatives. For this role you will specialise in Track. Your responsibilities include maintaining, inspecting and repairing the track network (Permanent Way or P‑Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient. The role is very manual, involves working with rails, sleepers and ballast, and is performed outside in all conditions. You will deliver work safely, check the team has the right competencies, and be a role model for safe working behaviours. Your commitment to self‑development and continuous learning is hugely important in this role and we will provide the training to develop both technical and non‑technical skills. Your Skills Matter Leadership – Lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery. Effective communication – Strong communication skills to deliver clear instructions. Technical skills – Knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the discipline you are applying for. Safety – Consistently role‑model safe behaviours, arrange and implement safe systems of work, and challenge any potential risks. Problem solver – Persistently find safe and effective solutions, keep up to date with new standards, procedures and instructions. Willingness to learn – Continuously develop skills and competencies relevant to the discipline. Relevant qualification – Ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline or equivalent experience. Other Important Information: Shifts – Technician roles involve a changing shift pattern including days, nights and weekends. Outdoor working – Comfortable working in all weathers. Safe working – Employment offers are subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment and BPSS pre‑employment checks. Driving – A valid Category B licence is required.
