WAFC – Head of Strength & Conditioning 👤Reports to: Head of Performance & Sporting Director Role Overview: The Head of Strength and Conditioning leads the development, delivery, and continual refinement of physical performance programmes across the first team. The role ensures players are optimally prepared to meet the physical demands of competitive football by designing evidence-based training strategies, overseeing strength, power, and conditioning work, and integrating performance data to maximise player availability and on-pitch impact. Working collaboratively with coaching, medical, and sport science staff, the club drives a high-performance culture that supports long-term athletic development and reduces injury risk. Key responsibilities and duties: Lead on testing and profiling of first team player physical capabilities Construct individual player profiles to aid player development, including strength & power, speed, fitness, injury prevention, nutrition, recovery and lifestyle Maximise player availability and physical capabilities by designing and delivering periodised strength & conditioning programmes Assist Head of Performance in constructing periodised training schedules Liase with coaching & analysis staff to determine individual player development in line with “Wigan Athletic Player”, and construct individual player protocols that are tracked & analysed throughout season Develop 6-8 weekly player reviews outlining key individual player physical development Assist coaching staff to construct unit/player specific training drills to integrate into squad training sessions aligning with individual player development Design and develop athlete monitoring protocols to track fatigue and freshness throughout the season Work closely with medical staff to construct injury specific pathways in order to maximise return to play process for injured players Align S&C protocols with medical staff through the use of continued education & department operating procedures Assist Head of Performance in the design of a high performance environment Disseminate profiling methods throughout the Club from first team into academy physical performance pathway Provide continued education & support to Academy performance staff to align club processes Qualifications: (Requirements) MSc in Strength & Conditioning, Sports Science or a related discipline. UKSCA accreditation or Equivalent. Experience: Extensive Experience within Elite Team Sporting Environments. Track record of creating physical development programs. Knowledge, Skills, and Qualities: Data-driven approach, proven ability to systematically record & monitor physical performance data. Experience using VALD, PowerBI or similar platforms.
