Groundwater Modelling Advisor

Job description We lead on the management of groundwater modelling and delivery of water resources projects on behalf of Environment Agency stakeholders. We are looking for an experienced Hydrogeologist and Project Manager with knowledge of conceptual and numerical groundwater models to join our Technical Projects Team. The role supports the Environment Agency’s groundwater modelling programme in East Anglia by delivering comprehensive regulatory groundwater model development, updates and operation to support business decisions and protect the environment. Responsibilities Take forward the groundwater investigation and modelling programme, using consultant or in‑house resources to undertake field investigations, refinements, model updates and scenario tests supporting water resource and quality decision‑making. Manage projects within the programme from initiation to delivery, ensuring on‑time, on‑budget and on‑scope outcomes. Act as a technical lead on groundwater investigations and modelling, keeping abreast of internal and external developments across the Environment Agency and the wider groundwater community. Organise the issuance of intellectual‑property licences to external organisations seeking to use Agency data, information and models. Represent the Agency in the wider groundwater modelling community and maintain professional relationships. Qualifications Experience as a water‑resources specialist who has worked with or developed groundwater models and can provide technical leadership. Ability to deliver high‑value projects, including securing budgets and project approvals, and procuring/managing consultants or in‑house resources. Strong organisational and prioritisation skills for complex activities. Proficiency in interpreting groundwater model results and supporting decision‑making. Excellent communication skills, keeping stakeholders informed and managing expectations. Ability to convey complex technical information to a range of audiences. Degree level education in a relevant discipline (Higher Degree in Hydrology, Hydrogeology or Water Resources Engineering preferred). Key Competencies Scientific Knowledge: Apply specialised scientific knowledge to provide evidence for internal and external customers. Programme & Project Management: Select, plan and manage contractors, programmes or events to achieve Agency objectives cost‑effectively. Customer & Partner Relations: Address the needs of internal and external customers, providing rapid and effective responses.
