Overview The Health Economics and Decision Science (HEDS) section in the School of Medicine & Population Health is seeking a full‑time Research Associate in Public Health and Labour Economic Modelling. You will work on applied and methodological research projects focused on policies involving interventions affecting both health and work outcomes and their interactions. The team is at the forefront of public health economic microsimulation modelling. Your work will include quantitative analyses, writing research proposals, publishing in peer‑reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, and engaging with policy stakeholders. You may also contribute to Masters‑level teaching and postgraduate supervision. Applicants should hold a Masters and PhD (or equivalent) in a numerate discipline such as mathematics, operational research, statistics or economics, and ideally have an emerging track record of peer‑reviewed publications and research impact. Main Duties and Responsibilities Undertake multidisciplinary research in Public Health and Labour Economic Modelling, including cost‑benefit analysis and microsimulation modelling. Conduct methodological research in health economics and decision sciences. Develop and write proposals for research and knowledge‑exchange projects. Perform statistical analysis of datasets. Publish findings in leading peer‑reviewed journals and present papers at conferences. Contribute to literature review, data analysis, and elicitation processes to obtain model parameters. Prepare research documents such as reports, project updates, and briefing papers. Communicate effectively with research partners and collaborators within and outside the university, including international collaborators. Participate in professional activities such as organizing local research events. Contribute to the Section’s teaching by delivering lectures, tutorials, external short courses, and developing online teaching materials. Actively uphold the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’, including excellence in applied teaching and research. Make ethical decisions and integrate the University sustainability strategy into your work where possible. Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post. Person Specification / Criteria Essential Postgraduate qualification (Masters level or equivalent experience) in a numerate subject such as Economics, Health Economics, Labour Economics, Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics, Data Science, etc. PhD (or equivalent research experience) in a quantitative discipline related to the programme, e.g., health economics, labour economics, simulation or systems modelling, data science in health or work. Experience in using data and evidence to populate and parameterise a model (literature reviews, data analysis, elicitation). Capability to design, develop and write research and knowledge‑exchange proposals. Experience of undertaking decision‑analytic modelling for public health interventions. Strong organisational skills to manage multiple research projects simultaneously. Respect for confidentiality and awareness of ethical issues. Desirable Experience with modelling software tools (R, Python, VBA, bespoke microsimulation etc.). Good knowledge of statistical methods for cross‑sectional and longitudinal datasets. Publications in peer‑reviewed journals. Experience of teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate or short‑course level. Excellent communication skills in oral, written and presentation modes within academic and health‑policy environments. Salary and Grade Grade 7 – £38,784 to £47,389 per annum, with potential progression to £51,753. Work Arrangement Full‑time, 2‑year contract, starting 1 April 2026.
