Job Purpose

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Lead Platform Engineer to spearhead the design, development, and management of our platform infrastructure. This role is pivotal in driving efficiency, scalability, and reliability across our technology stack, with a focus on enhancing developer experience, accelerating delivery pipelines, and ensuring operational excellence.

As the Lead Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for leading a high-performing team, setting technical direction, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align platform capabilities with business goals.

Job Duties

  1. Platform Strategy & Leadership:
    • Define and implement the vision, strategy and roadmap for the platform engineering function.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, automation and continuous improvement within the team.
    • Act as a technical leader, providing mentorship and guidance to platform engineers.
  2. Infrastructure Management:
    • Design, build and maintain scalable, reliable and secure cloud-native and on-premise platforms.
    • Drive adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices using tools such as Terraform, Ansible and scripting languages.
    • Ensure the platform adheres to best practices in scalability, performance and cost efficiency.
  3. Developer Experience (DevEx):
    • Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines to accelerate software delivery.
    • Develop self-service capabilities and tools to enhance developer productivity.
    • Advocate for best practices in application observability, debugging and monitoring.
  4. Operational Excellence:
    • Lead efforts in improving platform reliability, resilience and disaster recovery capabilities.
    • Establish and monitor SLAs, SLOs and SLIs for platform services.
    • Manage incident response processes, ensuring rapid resolution and root cause analysis.
  5. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Collaborate with engineering, product and security teams to align platform capabilities with organizational needs.
    • Communicate progress, challenges and successes to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essentials:

  • Expertise in Kubernetes, containerization, and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Helm).
  • Strong proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Advanced knowledge of CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or ArgoCD.
  • Hands-on experience with observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or New Relic.
  • Proficiency in programming/scripting languages (e.g., Python, Go, Bash).
  • Deep understanding of networking, security, and zero-downtime deployment strategies.
  • Proven experience in platform engineering, DevOps or related roles with a track record of delivering large-scale, resilient platforms.
  • Experience leading and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Self-motivated, with excellent problem-solving skills and a drive for improvement.

Desirables:

  • Experience of building or supporting services on AWS or VMWare.
  • Worked with and supported remote team members.

What is in it for me?

  • £70,000 - £95,000 per annum, depending on experience.
