Consultant Paediatrician - Community Child Health The closing date is 02 January 2026 Applications are invited for post of Consultant Paediatrician in Community Child Health with special interest in Neurodisability. The post offers 10 programmed activities. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a motivated and passionate consultant paediatrician. The post is a substantive post, less than full time applications would also be welcomed. The community paediatric department provides population-based services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and works very closely with our multidisciplinary teams, special schools and health centres helping to bring services to the community. Applicants will be expected to have, or to obtain within 6 months of interview, a CCT in Paediatrics. Enquiries or arrangement for a preliminary visit are welcome. Main duties of the job Our community child health and disability teams run a wide range of comprehensive services supporting the care of children in the following areas: child development, looked after children, vulnerable children, adoption and fostering, safeguarding. It is therefore likely that the successful applicant could have a variety of developed or developing skill sets and find a fulfilling role within our department. This post will have a key focus on the cared for child and on Neurodisability. The department has a strong commitment to service development and teaching and applicants with shared enthusiasm for these areas are encouraged. Our team has a broad range of expertise. The post holder would contribute to acute child protection rota and there are opportunities to participate in the acute general paediatric rota if this was an area of interest. The post holder will take a lead role to be agreed upon appointment, depending on interests and expertise. Job responsibilities PLEASE REFER TO THE ATTACHED JOB DESCRIPTION FOR FULL DUTIES OF THE ROLE. The postholder will join the existing team of community child health and neurodisability paediatric consultants as well as the wider community paediatric team including specialist nurses, Cared for Health Team, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. This is a replacement fourth community consultant post. The department also has three consultants in paediatric neurodisability and 3 specialty Doctors / senior clinical fellows, allowing a spread of caseload according to special interests and expertise. Area of interest to support the needs of the directorate. The post holder is expected to possess Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post. A satisfactory job plan and annual appraisal is essential. The post holder will be expected to develop the service in keeping with local, regional and national guidance. Attendance at mandatory training such as fire safety is expected. Person Specification Audit and Research Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice. Involvement in recent quality improvement measures. Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit / audit in specialty area. Experience of clinical research. Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals. Qualifications Primary medical qualification. Full GMC registration. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC (there is flexibility with the 6-month period with Executive Medical Director approval). CCT or equivalent in paediatrics. Subspecialty Community Child Health, General paediatrics or neurodisability or equivalent training. Specialist interest to support the department. SPIN accreditation. Teaching and Education Experience of supervising junior medical staff. Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills. Qualification in medical education. Experience Experience of child protection medical examination and compilation of reports. Demonstrated commitment to working within the speciality. Appropriate training/experience in area of special interest. Experience of Working with Cared for Health and CYP in need of permanence. Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues. Evidence of organisational, management and time management skills. Specialist experience in delivering services relevant to community paediatrics or neurodisability. Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals. Management course and / or certificate. Personal Attributes Alignment with the Trust core values and behaviours. Flexible approach to service delivery and committed approach to development. Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate, to the Trust and its workforce. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and healthcare workers and other agencies. Evidence of understanding of and adherence to principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the GMC.
