Job Overview The Blood Safety and Conservation Team (BSACT) offers a multidisciplinary approach to blood safety, conservation, and haemostasis management across all Oxford University Hospitals sites. You will provide expert haemostasis analysis and blood conservation strategies to reduce transfusion requirements and improve patient outcomes. Main Responsibilities Provide a highly specialist technical and diagnostic haemostasis service to clinical specialties across the Trust. Identify procedures requiring extensive red cell transfusion, assess suitability for cell salvage or other transfusion reduction strategies, and advise clinicians accordingly. Collaborate with senior colleagues to diagnose and manage patients with prothrombotic tendencies or haematological conditions, including anti‑coagulation, anti‑platelet and anti‑fibrinolytic therapy. Partner with pre‑operative assessment and anaesthetic teams to ensure all relevant information on techniques is available for patients. Lead education and training initiatives for staff on safe transfusion practice. Promote best practice in transfusion and patient blood management, including the use of Smart Fridge Technology and remote electronic cross‑matching. Identify areas for improvement through audit and incident review, and implement changes via governance structures and trust forums. Act as a visible clinical presence across all OUH sites, fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to ensure consistent, safe, and sustainable use of blood products. Person Specification Education / Qualifications Registered Nurse/Midwife or Operating Department Practitioner Relevant degree to the profession At least 3 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, Operating Department Practitioner or Registered Midwife, with at least 1 year at Band 6 level. Teaching / assessment / mentoring experience or qualification. Post‑graduate level study (HEI Level 7) or equivalent evidence of continuous professional development. Knowledge Up‑to‑date knowledge of the speciality and evidence‑based practice. Knowledge of key professional issues and guidelines relating to professional practice. Decision‑making and the ability to work across professional boundaries. Leadership skills for service improvement, risk management, governance and quality. Knowledge of transfusion‑related regulatory compliance and reporting structures. Advanced understanding of coagulation management and point‑of‑care testing. Stakeholder engagement experience. Risk management training and awareness of risk assessment processes. Experience using incident reporting systems (e.g., Ulysses). Skills Leadership evidence at Band 6 level. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation abilities. Audit experience or knowledge. Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively with independent problem‑solving. Good time‑management, organisational skills and prioritisation for a busy workload. Accountability in advanced clinical practitioner roles and autonomous working. Experience with databases (Excel, MS Word) and data analysis. Performance under pressure in emergency situations, flexibility for service delivery. Knowledge of Electronic Blood Management Systems (e.g., BloodTrack). Strategic thinking for long‑term service development. Awareness of Clinical Governance, Clinical Effectiveness, and Patient Safety Agenda. Capability to deliver training and education to all professional groups. Knowledge of cell salvage, TEG, and their use in blood conservation strategies. Other Interest in clinical transfusion practice and understanding of relevant national strategy / policy. Interest in advancing blood conservation strategies locally and nationally.
