Consultants in Emergency General Surgery

Job summary We are looking to recruit 3 enthusiastic Consultants with a special interest in emergency general surgery to support the reconfiguration of the emergency general surgical services at the Royal United Hospital Bath (RUH). These posts will provide specialist emergency general surgical cover during the day, working alongside a second Consultant to supervise the emergency surgical admission unit (SAU), same‑day emergency care (SDEC) and emergency theatres from Monday to Thursday. The role also includes night and weekend on‑call cover on a 1 in 12 rota. Successful candidates will manage patients with acute biliary pathology and must be competent and experienced in laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. An interest in teaching and research is encouraged. Opportunities exist to lead projects, courses and formal teaching roles through the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and the affiliated Bristol Medical School. Dedicated research nurses support national portfolio trials. Main duties of the job You will be a Consultant in General Surgery with a subspecialist interest in Emergency General Surgery, providing additional support for acute biliary disease and working closely with upper GI Consultants to offer elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy in‑patient for acute cholecystitis and gallstone pancreatitis. Flexible sessions allow cover of the acute surgical unit when other emergency Consultants are on leave, and offer the opportunity to undertake elective activity such as endoscopy, outpatient clinics and elective lists based on clinical interests. You will participate in audit, directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Lead Clinician of General Surgery. You will also contribute to resource management and assist in preparing business plans.
