Job Summary Working under the direct supervision of the Lead Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients, including domiciliary bloods. Main duties of the job Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed, confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample Collection of samples of blood in accordance with training/procedures Conducting domiciliary bloods Using the centrifuge to prepare blood samples Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity Checking patient identification against the request and confirming with patient and checking against the SystmOne record Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff Notifying a clinician of any significant patient issues Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team Maintaining patient confidentiality Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements Correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Adhering to infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, and implementing those protocols across the practice Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills, and initiating and managing the training of others across the full range of infection control and patient processes Safe management of sharps procedures, including training, use, storage and disposal Actively identifying, reporting, and correcting health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately Waste management, including collection, handling, segregation, container management, storage and collection Spillage control procedures, management, and training Demonstrating due regard for safeguarding Supporting the equality, diversity and rights of patients, carers and colleagues About Us Ilkley & Wharfedale Medical Practice is a small, established family GP surgery based in the historic spa town of Ilkley offering a personal service to our patients. The surgery operates from modern premises close to the centre of Ilkley and has a list size of 5608 patients. Ilkley & Wharfedale is a training practice for GP Registrars and medical students with a supportive multi-disciplinary team who work hard to meet the needs of our patients. We use SystmOne clinical system software and knowledge of this would be an advantage but not essential as training will be given.
