The Role Trading Standards supports legitimate business activity by providing advice, encouraging economic development, and ensuring a level playing field. We protect the economic interests of Essex residents, especially vulnerable community members, by using a diverse toolkit to tackle rogue traders and businesses that cause consumer harm. The Enforcement Officer (Tobacco and Vapes) will focus on the enforcement of rules regulating vapes and tobacco, including illegal/illicit product supply and age‑restricted sales to children. The role involves: Conducting visits to inspect businesses for compliance. Providing guidance and support to traders. Gathering evidence and compiling prosecution reports when necessary. Contributing to service and community objectives such as reducing crime, anti‑social behaviour, and improving health and wellbeing. Enforcing civil and criminal Trading Standards laws efficiently and impartially. About You Essential Previous experience of working in Trading Standards, enforcement, or a comparable regulatory role. Strong attention to detail and the ability to keep accurate, concise, legally admissible records. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the capability to learn bespoke Trading Standards databases such as IDB, Civica APP/Cx trader, and enforcement databases. Desirable Knowledge of relevant Trading Standards legislation and enforcement procedures. Excellent communication skills with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Education at RQF level 3 (A Levels) or equivalent by experience. Evidence of continuing professional development in a relevant professional area.
