Do you have a genuine passion for supporting children’s mental health and emotional development? Are you looking to make a tangible difference in the lives of young learners who need a champion in their corner?
An inclusive and nurturing primary school in Havering is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant with a strong background in SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) to join their team. This full-time role offers a fulfilling opportunity to support pupils in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 who face barriers to learning due to emotional and behavioural needs.
About the Role:
This is a hands-on, pupil-focused position where you will be a key support figure for students who struggle with anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, or behavioural challenges. Working closely with the SENCO and class teachers, you will provide consistent, structured support that helps children feel safe, heard, and ready to learn.
Key Responsibilities:
• Deliver one-to-one and small group interventions tailored to SEMH needs
• Support emotional regulation, positive behaviour and resilience strategies
• Collaborate with teaching staff and external professionals (e.g., CAMHS, ELSAs)
• Maintain clear, consistent routines and boundaries
• Champion pupil wellbeing and celebrate small wins every day
Requirements
Ideal Candidate:
• Experience working with children with SEMH needs or behavioural difficulties
• Calm, compassionate and able to build trust-based relationships
• Confident using behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques
• A reflective team player with excellent communication skills
• Committed to safeguarding and inclusive education
Benefits
• A school culture that prioritises mental health and pupil support
• Regular CPD and specialist SEMH training opportunities
• A highly supportive and experienced SEN team
• Opportunities to grow into long-term or permanent SEN roles
