Go back Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Consultant in Acute Medicine The closing date is 04 January 2026 This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified clinician to join our expanding Acute Medicine service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The postholder will provide senior clinical leadership across the 27 inpatient beds on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC), as well as supporting post-take review of medical patients within the Emergency Department. You will be part of a committed team of Acute Medicine Consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team based at Arrowe Park Hospital. The Acute Medicine footprint is currently under review as part of a major reconfiguration, making this a particularly exciting time to join and contribute to the development of a redeveloping and evolving service. The role also offers the opportunity to support the department's research agenda and to play a key part in shaping the future of our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) model, including integration with system partners. Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register, or within six months of achieving CCT/CESR at the time of interview. Main duties of the job The principal duties of this post are: To comply at all times with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' as amended or substituted from time to time. To maintain patient confidentiality at all times. To undertake the duties defined within the attached recruitment pack. To be accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources in the delivery of your duties, and to be professionally accountable to the Medical Director. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust's corporate Induction. To participate in the Trust's Statutory & Mandatory training programme. To be responsible for the clinical management of all patients under your care. To work flexibly with colleagues to meet the needs of the service and achieve Trust and national targets. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 month. Person Specification Qualifications and Training MRCP or equivalent Candidates must be on the GMC Specialist Register CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview MD or other postgraduate qualification Experience Extensive experience in the management of acute medical admissions and a wide range of general medicine knowledge Significant period of experience on an AMU in a senior clinical role Experience and an understanding of Same Day Emergency Care and ambulatory clinical care Clinical Skills Competency in common clinical emergency procedures Experience in the use of POCUS or Echocardiography Interpersonal Skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills High level organisational skills Teaching experience Recognised teaching course or qualification Personal Qualities Ability to relate and support colleagues - nursing and medical. Excellent team-working to look after the "pool" of acute medicine patients Understanding the Role of Clinical Audit Experience of organising and completing clinical audit and Quality Improvement projects Research and Evidence Based Practice Knowledge of national guidelines relevant to acute medicine Research and publications relevant to acute medicine Appreciation and Understanding ofthe Role in Terms of Management Evidence of management skills Ability to integrate within, motivate and provide professional lead in the MDT Evidence of Leadership skills Other Requirements Membership of Society of Acute Medicine Recent attendance or participation in Acute Medicine related courses or clinical updates Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
