Overview We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a consultant in paediatric gastroenterology. GNCH aims to become one of the best children’s hospitals in the world, with a strong gastroenterology department central to this vision. We welcome applications from individuals with grid or equivalent training in paediatric gastroenterology. You must possess MRCPCH or equivalent, and will be a registered medical practitioner on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register for Paediatrics within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee. CCT in paediatric gastroenterology or evidence of equivalent training/experience is essential. In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit. Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee. You will join consultant colleagues in Paediatric Gastroenterology and consultant General Paediatricians with specialist interests in gastroenterology as well as 2 middle grades in paediatric gastroenterology. The post does not currently include out-of-hours paediatric work, but as the department grows, we hope that this can be incorporated. The department is supported by an excellent multidisciplinary team that includes 2 Nurse Specialists in IBD, 2 Nurse Specialists in complex feeding disorders, home and inpatient TPN, and a number of excellent dieticians. Three pharmacy specialists support the team. There is excellent radiology support with regular radiology discussion meetings supporting MDTs and twice monthly MDTs with histopathology colleagues. Organisation context Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching NHS foundation trust with around 16,000 staff and an annual income of £1 billion. Clinical responsibilities To provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of acute and longstanding paediatric gastroenterology problems, taking independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to them. Contribute to the service delivering capsule endoscopy and wireless PH studies. Lead and develop the in-hospital complex nutrition team (enteral and parenteral). Work closely with nursing and other staff to create/further develop systems of care dedicated to the management of children with specific disorders, in keeping with the department’s philosophy. Lead dedicated paediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinics. Lead paediatric gastroenterology endoscopy lists including unscheduled work (within hours). Participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance. Undergo Continued Medical Education (CME) in accordance with Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health guidelines. Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review with objectives aligned to Trust goals and a 42-week working year with holidays. Teaching of medical students and post graduate students or fellows/observers. Managerial Manage dedicated paediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinics. Manage endoscopy lists to ensure maximum theatre efficiency. Participate in Clinical Governance and contribute to multidisciplinary quality improvement, audit and risk management for paediatric care. Collaborate with consultant colleagues, nursing staff, and related care providers. Assist the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director in timely investigation of complaints according to Trust policy. Contribute to the organisation and running of paediatric services within the Trust. Prompt handling of SUI’s including convening and leading M+M meetings. Administrative Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and the Children’s Services Directorate in cooperation with department heads and the Clinical Director. Entitled to become a member of the Medical Staff Committee. Undertake general administrative duties within a framework of Trust aims and objectives. Involvement in financial management of the paediatric departmental budget to deliver high-quality care efficiently. Research Research is prioritized; opportunities to participate in clinical trials and work with Newcastle University on immune dysregulation and the gut microbiome are supported. Teaching Participate in teaching undergraduate medical students and other healthcare professionals within the Directorate. Develop teaching skills for the Trust’s teaching and training leadership group; supervise postgraduate trainees and contribute to education across the department.
