OverviewResearch Associate*/Research Assistant in Sustainability of AI (Fixed Term)The Green Algorithms Initiative seeks a talented researcher to join our team to address the environmental impacts of artificial intelligence and data centres. The role focuses on improving how computing environmental impacts are estimated and reported and on investigating the broader effects of high-impact computational tools in AI. The post is aligned with our group’s aim to advance sustainable computing and foster open, reproducible research.ResponsibilitiesLead projects that improve how computing environmental impacts are estimated and reported.Investigate the impacts of high-impact computational tools in AI.Develop and pursue your own research ideas aligned with the group’s priorities.Explore research avenues such as: Studying environmental impacts of AI tools expected to be prominent in research in the coming years.Taking a global view on the impacts of data centres and AI, considering environmental sustainability, human health, and perspectives from the Global South.Exploring integration of life-cycle analyses in impact estimates and expanding environmental impacts beyond carbon footprint, with emphasis on water usage.This research will contribute to improving AI impact reporting and illuminating multiple facets of the issue. If needed, you will be trained to obtain the required level of expertise in AI, green computing and environmental sustainability. The work is expected to lead to first-author high-impact publications and positions the holder to contribute to international debates on AI sustainability.About the GroupThe Green Algorithms Initiative, led by Dr Loïc Lannelongue, is a world-leading project focused on quantifying and reducing the environmental impacts of computational science. Tools and frameworks include the Green Algorithms online calculator, server-specific monitoring tools, and the GREENER Principles for Environmentally Sustainable Computational Science. All tools are open access where possible. The Initiative has received nominations and awards for its contributions to sustainable research (e.g., HDR-UK Impact Award).You will be part of the Lannelongue group and work closely with the senior scientists, including Dr Loïc Lannelongue and Professor Michael Inouye, as well as other members of the Department and collaborators at other institutions. There will be links with the Department of Computer Science and Technology in Cambridge. The post-holder will develop collaborations with local and international groups. Opportunities to develop supervision and teaching skills will be provided.Qualifications & ExperiencePhD (or equivalent experience) in computer science, machine learning/AI, sustainability, or related subject, or near completion of PhD at appointment (see below).Strong interest in the intersection of computing, science and environmental sustainability.Ability to communicate and present results to scientists, with excellent verbal and written communication and strong organisational skills.At the group level, we value equity, diversity and inclusion and welcome applications from diverse backgrounds.
