City of Edinburgh, United Kingdom AMIS (Abused Men In Scotland) Full time

Overview Abused Men In Scotland (AMIS) is Scotland's only male-oriented domestic abuse support charity. As Treasurer, you’ll have oversight and management of the charity's finances, guide sustainable growth, and help ensure every penny supports our life-changing frontline work. AMIS cannot operate without proper financial security and management. As Treasurer, you will play a vital role in strengthening AMIS’s financial stability and ensuring we can continue to meet the growing demand for our services. Your work will ensure that every grant, donation, and fundraising pound is spent wisely and accounted for transparently. By maintaining robust financial systems and reporting processes, you’ll help the Board make confident, well-informed decisions about service development, staffing, and long-term planning. You’ll also play a key role in demonstrating accountability to our funders and supporters, giving them confidence that their contributions are being spent as intended and making a real impact, while also continuously looking for new funding streams. With AMIS managing multiple grants and working to diversify income streams, your expertise will help us accurately forecast upcoming challenges, manage cash flow, and plan ahead with confidence. You’ll help shape how we invest in our staff, our systems, and ensure we balance ambition with stability as we grow. The Treasurer’s guidance also helps demystify finance for the wider Board, allowing every trustee — regardless of their background — to engage meaningfully in financial decision-making. This clarity and confidence strengthen the whole governance of the charity. Beyond the numbers, your contribution will directly support our frontline mission. Every sound financial decision helps us keep our helpline running, fund our outreach training and development opportunities, and pay our staff the wages they deserve for their incredible work in dealing with highly complex and emotionally challenging caseloads. In short, your role will help AMIS remain a financially sustainable and effective charity and, by extension, allow us to confidently keep providing a high-quality level of service while also publicly advocating for the rights of and raising awareness over male victims of domestic abuse, both within government and in society at large. Your financial leadership will give us the stability we need to grow our voice, strengthen our services, and continue changing the lives of our service users across Scotland. What are we looking for? Experience in a board or senior management role, ideally within the charity or third sector. Solid understanding of charity accounting principles, including restricted and unrestricted funds, accrual-based accounts, and annual reporting requirements. High level of proficiency in Xero accounting software, with the ability to produce clear and accurate reports. Confidence in financial analysis and presentation, able to interpret budgets and convey key information clearly to trustees without a financial background. Experience liaising with independent examiners or auditors, ensuring that financial records are accurate and compliant. Familiarity with OSCR and HMRC requirements, including Gift Aid, payroll, and statutory submissions. Understanding of charity financial policies and procedures, including expenses, financial controls, and reporting structures. Ability to oversee multiple income streams, including grant-funded projects, donations, and service contracts, ensuring all funds are properly allocated and spent within funder timelines. Collaborative and supportive working style, able to work closely with the Head of Services, Finance & Admin Officer, and other trustees to maintain transparency and accountability. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain financial matters clearly and with context. A hands-on, pragmatic approach, suited to a small but growing charity where flexibility and initiative are valued. Commitment to good governance and integrity, ensuring AMIS continues to meet the highest standards of financial stewardship. Empathy and openness to AMIS’s mission, with an awareness of and sensitivity and viewpoint in strong agreement with the needs of male victims of domestic abuse. What will you be doing? Founded in 2010, AMIS is Scotland’s only national specialist helpline for men experiencing domestic abuse (defined as abuse between intimate/sexual partners in Scotland). We support individuals aged 18+ who identify as men, and anyone with concerns about such men. AMIS also provides training for other services wishing to learn more about supporting male victims, and engages with policymakers to highlight the need for support provision for all victims and survivors of domestic abuse in Scotland. The current AMIS Board currently comprises six highly active trustees drawn from diverse professional backgrounds including counselling & psychotherapy, psychology, corporate and business governance, tech, education and the military. Together, we provide strategic direction, financial oversight, and guidance to a small but dedicated staff team delivering life-changing frontline work. Our current priority is ensuring AMIS is financially secure and well-positioned to meet our rapidly increasing demands. AMIS supports around 3,000 men annually, all of whom are either currently living or have previously experienced abuse in Scotland. We are actively reviewing our long-term funding strategy and are keen to recruit a treasurer who is highly experienced in writing and winning funding grants, developing new commercial partnerships, exploring the corporate & social responsibility requirements of other organisations who may wish to partner with us, and any other ways in which we may be able to generate funds to ensure our financial capabilities matches our ambition. You will also chair our Finance Subcommittee and work closely with our Head of Services and our Business Support Officer to ensure our financial systems, policies, and reporting processes remain robust, transparent, and compliant. Responsibilities Overseeing budgets and ensuring funds are spent in line with grant conditions and timelines Liaising with our Independent Examiner and overseeing the preparation of accrual-based accounts using Xero Preparing and presenting accessible financial reports for Board meetings and the AGM Acting as the main contact with HMRC for Gift Aid and statutory returns Authorising bank payments, payroll, and pension contributions in collaboration with staff Ensuring our financial policies and procedures are reviewed, updated, and adhered to As treasurer, you also automatically become a member of the Board of Trustees. All trustees share collective responsibility for financial oversight, but the Treasurer provides the financial leadership and clarity that enable the Board as a whole to make confident, informed decisions. What makes this role exciting? This is not a passive role—our trustees are hands-on, collaborative, and deeply committed to the cause. You’ll join a team that values transparency, compassion, and courage, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing your work behind the scenes directly supports men rebuilding their lives after domestic abuse. #J-18808-Ljbffr
