Overview A vacancy has arisen in this clinical health psychology service, with the current post holder having successfully moved onto clinical psychology training courses. The post is based in the Outlook service which provides highly specialist psychological support for people with appearance‑related distress and involves direct therapeutic work with clients, audit and evaluation responsibilities, as well as maintaining the service website and related media. Responsibilities Support the clinical work of the qualified psychologists in the Outlook team, including organising evaluation forms and data processing. Provide direct client support following intervention protocols, under the supervision of a registered clinical psychologist. Lead the maintenance of the Outlook website and other media used to inform and prepare clients for their first contact and subsequent follow‑up. Assist in the development and delivery of self‑management courses. Contribute to research activities: organising meetings with the research team, collaborating with universities and charitable organisations, and supporting data collection and analysis. Help develop patient information resources, including the Outlook website. Support the achievement of key performance indicators and monitor service quality. Provide flexible support within the division of Anaesthesia, Surgery, Critical Care and Renal Medicine (ASCR) and across the NMSK division. Maintain and improve systems for informing, supporting and engaging the client group served by Outlook. Actively undertake regular clinical supervision from senior practitioners. Professional Responsibilities Participate in performance reviews with the line manager and in professional development activities. Fully participate in clinical governance processes, service meetings, clinical audit, development of service standards and improvement initiatives. Remain up‑to‑date on relevant issues and national/local policy affecting psychological care in specialist settings. Undertake regular clinical supervision and keep records in accordance with supervision policy. Adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct of the British Psychological Society and the HCPC. Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records, generate reports and letters, and report administrative data such as clinic formation and attendances. Manage own caseload, including formulation, planning and monitoring of interventions. Maintain other professional records such as appointments, training, annual leave and hand‑over documentation. Physical and Cognitive Requirements Concentrate for unbroken periods of up to two hours for detailed assessment and intervention. Sit for at least an hour when conducting clinical work, including prolonged sitting at patients’ bedsides. Lift and move equipment (but not patients) using safe work systems. Use display‑screen equipment for communication and research. Travel as required to fulfil agreed work objectives. React flexibly to changing work priorities. Work with individuals experiencing emotional distress, including the processing of traumatic experiences and verbal aggression. Qualifications and Experience Good honours degree in psychology (upper second or higher) recognised by the BPS and HCPC. Ability to communicate effectively with patients who have significant barriers and emotional distress. Knowledge of research design, ethics, randomisation, data base construction, data processing and reporting. Advanced knowledge of computer‑based statistical analysis software and PowerPoint for presenting results. Experience in computer‑based literature search and review. Skilled communication, both verbal and written, for summarising research and presenting psychological concepts. Ability to work effectively with clinical supervision and maintain professional resilience. Flexibility to manage competing demands such as assessment, reporting, supervision and governance. High competency with IT equipment for test administration, scoring, communication and clinical research. Experience as a psychology assistant or comparable NHS experience is an advantage but not essential.
