The role specifically builds and supports services for regulated and commercial solutions in the aviation sector, as part of the World Area Forecast Centre (WAFC). Technology Stack We use a diverse set of cutting‑edge technologies, including Python and JavaScript for a wide range of applications, AWS and Azure cloud infrastructure, containerisation with Docker, serverless architectures, as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies to enhance weather and climate predictions. Compensation & Benefits Up to £65,568 per year, including: £43,081 base pay Outstanding Civil Service pension, employer contribution 28.97% Recruitment Retention Allowance – £5,300 per annum market supplement (April 2024 – March 2026) Annual leave: 27.5 days + bank holidays at start, rising to 32.5 days + bank holidays after 5 years; option to buy/sell up to 5 days per year Essential Criteria Modern Development Standards – comfortable with GitHub, AWS services, Jira and able to apply them to support complex projects and programmes Programming & Build – ownership of Epics within DevOps, collaboration on specifications, design, code, test and document complex programs or scripts Systems Design & Integration – confident at designing moderate‑risk systems, applying appropriate design standards and tools; coordinate build activities and support integration testing User Focus & Service Support – experience collaborating with user researchers, representing users, prioritising user stories and guiding others; identify, locate and fix complex faults with a customer focus Information Security – design solutions and services with security controls embedded, engineered to mitigate threats as a core feature Working Arrangements Hybrid working is an option: part of the week in the office and part from home.
