Job Summary The Ward Hostess/Host role is responsible for the efficient and effective service of meal ordering, beverages and meals to patients at ward level, supporting ward clinical staff in delivering a highly professional catering service at Darlington Memorial Hospital. Responsibilities Reheat nutritious, appetizing meals to the highest standards of nutrition, temperature, quality, presentation, hygiene and safety. Assist with electronic patient meal ordering. Maintain high standards of food service, reheating and quality control across all operations. Ensure temperature monitoring and recording of all reheating processes in accordance with HACCP and departmental policies. Assist with receipt, quality assurance and stock control of goods from the Central Production Unit, ensuring correct storage, security and proper stock rotation. Participate in hygiene audits and cleaning schedule inspections, liaising with Food Service Supervisors to address remedial work. Help with general cleaning of crockery and kitchen utensils using the dishwashing machine or by hand when required. Support the Food Services Supervisor and Manager in day‑to‑day operational management of food service while ensuring high quality and cost‑effective service. Adhere to food safety and allergen regulations at all times. Provide a highly customer‑focused service to all users. Maintain communication channels between staff, visitors and patients regarding patient catering. Work safely to avoid risk to other persons during duties. Handle complaints or comments regarding the service courteously from Trust staff or patients. Assist in developing staff preferences, promote flexible working arrangements and support changes following major life events. Qualifications Essential Level 2 Certificate in Food Hygiene or working towards it. Natural and enthusiastic staff member. Able to work with minimal supervision following set procedures. Effective interpersonal skills. Desirable A good standard of literacy and numeracy. Knowledge of catering sector. Flexible approach to work and adaptable to change. Bank work offered on an ‘as and when’ basis with no guaranteed hours; paid on a pro‑rated hourly rate for hours worked only.
