The Facility conducts a range of research studies from observational cohort studies to CTIMPs, covering disease indications from healthy volunteers to patients with schizophrenia, depression, dementia, and other mental health conditions. A significant opportunity exists to develop expertise in mental health and neuroscience clinical research. Clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN, RMN, LD, or other registrations) and familiarity with mental health conditions or dementia are essential; research experience is not required. Extensive training and an induction programme are provided to build confidence and skill. About the Facility The NIHR Oxford Health Clinical Research Facility (OH CRF) opened in 2011 to support intensive research studies in mental health and neuroscience. It is funded by the NIHR and is one of 28 facilities across England benefiting from nearly £161 million to expand early‑phase clinical research in NHS hospitals. Responsibilities Coordinate the care of your own caseload of clinical trial patients. Act as shift coordinator (Nurse in Charge), overseeing daily CRF coordination, guiding the team, and managing organisational issues. Collaborate with the CRF Team Lead to provide a comprehensive clinical trial service and take lead roles to ensure efficient unit operation. Ensure safe administration of investigational medicinal products (IMP) in accordance with protocols and local policy, including controlled drugs and phase‑I IMPs; may dispense IMPs. Perform clinical assessments for research studies, including mental‑health, cognitive and physical investigations such as side‑effect scales, ECGs, phlebotomy and vital signs. Maintain and develop clinical skills required for studies, including nursing support for lumbar puncture, cannulation, and IV drug administration. Supervise Student Nurses, Nurse Associate Trainees and Band 5 Nurses. Ensure trial‑specific investigations occur per protocol. Provide ongoing education, support and information to patients and carers regarding clinical trials. Accurately document patient/visit events in nursing, medical and trial notes. Review and report adverse events following local Trust policies, SOPs, and research protocols. Facilitate referrals to other specialists when required to optimise patient care. Record and report serious adverse events, communicating with the Principal Investigator and regulatory authorities. Offer ongoing follow‑up care during the clinical trial. Maintain patients' and carers' dignity at all times. Serve as the primary contact for the clinical trial participant. Support outpatient research clinics (Bipolar Research Clinic, Treatment‑Resistant Depression Clinic) with physical health assessments such as vital signs, ECGs and phlebotomy. Process biological samples (centrifuging, pipetting, transporting) according to IATA regulations. Assist in setting up clinical trials, coordinating assessments, and identifying recruitment pathways; works on large multi‑site trials. Keep Principal Investigator, CRF Manager and the wider study team informed of progress and issues. Promote research and the local portfolio across the network. Work in accordance with ICH‑GCP and Research Governance standards. Build links with community mental teams and voluntary organisations to facilitate recruitment. Identify eligible patients via clinician discussions or electronic records. Manage the local portfolio of clinical trials and ensure protocol adherence. Facilitate the informed consent process per legislation and the Mental Capacity Act. Register / randomise patients into trials. Maintain accurate recruitment records and case report forms (paper and electronic). Forward case report data promptly, adhering to protocol timelines. Provide data to internal and external collaborators regarding trial progress. Develop recruitment strategies, identify barriers, and proactively contribute to action plans. All new starters receive a thorough induction process to support learning key role aspects. Post is subject to satisfactory references covering three years of employment or study.
