Overview HSE's Occupational Hygiene teams play a critical role in reducing work‑related ill‑health across Great Britain's industry. This role offers an opportunity to apply technical knowledge and influence whole sector standards through frontline regulatory work and policy development. Responsibilities Regulate workplaces with a specialist team to ensure health risks are identified, evaluated and controlled. Provide in‑depth technical expertise on COSHH, legionella, asbestos and other occupational hygiene issues across a wide range of industries. Offer independent expert witness input to court proceedings. Develop operational and technical policy, guidance and procedures to raise control standards and clarify legal requirements. Collaborate on projects and initiatives to review and inform health and safety policy, providing guidance and identifying necessary changes. Support strategic stakeholder engagement and campaigns. Travel throughout Great Britain as required for inspections, with occasional overnight stays. Training & Development You will be enrolled in the Specialist Training Programme (STP) and required to study for and pass a formal assessment. Ongoing technical CPD and training in core subject areas are supported throughout the role. Qualifications & Experience In‑depth knowledge and practical experience in occupational hygiene, with a proven track record of identifying and solving exposure control issues. Ability to analyse compliance gaps against legal requirements and support legal action against non‑compliance. Strong communication skills to provide specialist opinion and expert evidence in reports and legal proceedings. Experience liaising internally and externally to develop operational policy, guidance and procedures on occupational hygiene matters. Current professional membership of BOHS Faculty of Occupational Hygiene at a minimum grade of LFOH or LFOH(S). Willingness to become a Chartered Member of BOHS within two years of completing your STP. Secure, maintain and expand relevant technical knowledge in occupational hygiene. Apply scientific/technical knowledge to assess compliance with statutory requirements and standards. Security Requirements Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check and meet the security requirements set by the Civil Service. A counter‑terrorist check is required prior to appointment.
