Job Overview As a self‑employed contractor in the construction industry, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks depending on your profession. The role may include generating new business opportunities, visiting clients to discuss jobs, negotiating with suppliers, managing on‑site and off‑site teams, completing paperwork such as VAT and tax returns, and planning the future of the business. Responsibilities Generating new business opportunities Visiting customers and clients to discuss or appraise jobs Negotiating with customers and suppliers to achieve the best price and profit margins Managing people on and offsite to make sure they’re working in the right way Completing paperwork and financial documents, such as VAT and tax returns Planning the future of the business and dealing with any issues with customers, suppliers and employees Undertaking training to improve employment opportunities How to Become a Self‑Employed Contractor To become a self‑employed contractor you will require experience within a particular trade or profession, and the ability to manage your own finances and workload. Depending on the job required, you may need to hold specific qualifications to prove your competency in plumbing, heating, gas or electrical work, and you may need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card to work on a construction site. You could become a self‑employed contractor after completing a university degree, college courses, an apprenticeship, or after gaining workplace experience. Relevant Education and Training University – A relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree can help you gain necessary skills for certain areas of construction. College / Training Provider – College courses are available in many subjects and can help you build specific skills. Apprenticeship – Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16 and provide on‑the‑job experience combined with training. GCSEs in English and Maths may help prepare you. Skills Knowledge and experience of building and construction Excellent time‑management skills Basic understanding of finance Ability to work well with others, or independently Good attention to detail Ambition and a desire to succeed Ability to be flexible and open to change Qualifications Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a construction‑related field, such as: Engineering Surveying Construction management Architecture Property and planning Building design Landscape architecture Experience in a specific trade or profession, with required trade qualifications to prove competency in plumbing, heating, gas or electrical work. Potential Earnings Newly trained self‑employed contractors can start at £28,000 Experienced self‑employed contractors can earn up to £68,000 Salaries depend on location, employer, level of responsibility, overtime, and completion of recognised industry training routes. #J-18808-Ljbffr
