Automation scientists are responsible for designing, developing and maintaining the laboratory automation solutions which are essential to Abcam R&D delivering thousands of new products to catalogue each year. In this role, at scientist level, you will work with cross functional teams to define the automation required, develop and validate solutions, deploy these into the lab and maintain/optimize as needed.
This position reports to the VP of Research and Innovation, located in Cambridge and will be on-site. At Abcam, our vision is to be the most influential life sciences company for researchers worldwide.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Identify processes which can be automated. Contribute to building business cases to get funding to implement automated solutions.
- Design and develop automation solutions, to include gathering and documenting requirements, ideation, proof of concept testing, build, validate and deploy solutions.
- Develop bespoke automation hardware and software which form components of the overall automation solution. These may be developed internally or with outsourced partners.
- Work with the lab teams to gather feedback on automation, propose and implement improvements.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on automation, contribute to building an automation strategy for Abcam.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- A Ph.D., or equivalent in physics, engineering, computer sciences or a life sciences discipline.
- Multiple years (3-5+ yrs) of experience in automation gained in biopharma or academia (post Ph.D studies).
- A deep knowledge of laboratory automation, in particular liquid handling and associated software.
- Programming expertise, at a minimum scripting for lab automation, ideally programming in common languages, for example python.
- Ability to work collaboratively in matrix settings, both within the organization and with external partners.
