Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant An organised and proactive Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant is required to support high-quality practical learning, ensuring efficient preparation of equipment and maintaining a safe, well-resourced science environment. This role is known internally as a Science Technician. SALARY: £25,186 per annum FTE / Actual Salary £20,433 per annum + Benefits LOCATION: Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire JOB TYPE: Full-Time, Permanent WORKING HOURS: 35 Hours per Week, 08:00 to 15:30, Monday to Friday, Term Time Only (39 weeks) JOB OVERVIEW We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant who will support practical science teaching by preparing equipment, helping to deliver safe lessons and ensuring resources are well organised and ready for use. As a Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant you will assist teaching staff during practical work, help maintain apparatus, support curriculum delivery and follow Health and Safety procedures including COSHH/CLEAPSS. You will bring strong organisational skills and a flexible, proactive approach to a busy school setting. As a Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant you will also prepare solutions, maintain microscopes and data loggers, support inventory checks and help set up equipment for enrichment activities such as STEM workshops. DUTIES Setting up Practical Experiments: Prepare and lay out equipment and materials for lessons Cleaning and Clearing Apparatus: Ensure equipment is cleaned and stored safely Maintaining Equipment: Keep apparatus and fittings in safe working order Stock Control: Monitor, replace and organise resources and stationery for laboratories Preparing Solutions: Mix and prepare chemicals and solutions for lessons Supporting Teaching Staff: Assist during lessons and help arrange cover materials Managing Storage Areas: Keep prep rooms and storage spaces clean and organised Supporting Enrichment: Set up equipment for STEM and other enrichment activities Equipment Construction: Build simple apparatus when required Maintaining Technical Resources: Look after microscopes and data logging equipment CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS ESSENTIAL GCSE in Science (A Level in Science preferred) Experience with laboratory equipment in an educational or scientific environment Good subject knowledge in science with strong organisational skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong ICT skills and accuracy in handling resources Ability to follow Health and Safety procedures including COSHH Patience, tact and effective communication skills DESIRABLE A background in science or previous lab experience Experience supporting practical learning in a school setting Experience assisting with equipment for enrichment activities BENEFITS Exceptional team environment where all staff are valued Excellent Continuing Professional Development with high quality CPD programs Many opportunities for career progression One day per academic year — a fully paid day off to support personal events Two-week October half term: Providing staff and students with an extended break during the autumn term Extensive department resources and facilities A tax efficient Cycle-to-Work scheme through salary sacrifice Staff membership rates to the school's modern Leisure Centre Enrolment in one of the UK’s largest public sector pension schemes The organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
