Senior laboratory Technician

Job Summary The Research and Innovation Department is expanding its Research Pathology portfolio and seeks a Senior Laboratory Technician. This full‑time (1.0 WTE) permanent role will operate across St. James’s University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, supporting over 300 research studies and clinical trials hosted at LTHT. Responsibilities Undertake complex pre‑analytical sample processing to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards, including centrifugation, aliquoting, PBMC processing and storage of research samples. Maintain sample integrity and traceability, ensuring meticulous documentation and data accuracy in accordance with GCP, laboratory SOPs, Trust policy and national regulations. Act as a technical lead in a nominated area, providing specialist laboratory knowledge and equipment oversight. Support training, competency development and supervision of junior technical staff, research nurses and technicians. Contribute to laboratory quality systems, including audits, monitoring visits and continuous improvement initiatives. Assist in study set‑up by reviewing laboratory manuals, planning sample workflows and preparing laboratory documentation. Participate in the out‑of‑hours sample processing rota and respond to time‑sensitive sample handling requirements. Collaborate with clinical study teams, industry partners, external contract laboratories and neighbouring establishments; attend regional and national meetings as required. Qualifications HNC or equivalent in a biological subject. Experience Previous experience in a laboratory environment, including training period. Basic competencies across a range of pre‑analytical techniques. Knowledge of routine and complex pre‑analytical laboratory methods, quality assurance and problem solving. Experience of research delivery. Desirable Experience in a prior research laboratory technical role. Knowledge of PBMC sample processing. Experience in line management.
