Job overview Are you a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in older adults and looking for an opportunity to work in a supportive, flexible and well-integrated multidisciplinary team? As a clinical leader you will join a team that is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of care for its patients. The North and West Oxfordshire CMHT provides mental health services to those aged over 65 living in the North and West of the county. The team operates from team bases in Banbury and Witney and you will provide mental health services to GP practices in and around Banbury (including Brackley and Deddington). The main centres of population within the teams' catchment area are Banbury, Witney and Chipping Norton, but there is also a large rural population and numerous villages. The team offers assessment and treatment of patients over the age of 65 with functional and organic mental illnesses. Diagnosis of dementia takes place in Memory Clinics with the support of dedicated non-medical staff. Patients with behavioural or psychiatric complications of dementia are managed within the general CMHT. There is a CMHT duty team each day, working from the Oxford team base, to coordinate the team's response to referrals and to manage urgent clinical matters, liaising with medical staff. Main duties of the job The Consultant will provide senior medical input and clinical leadership to the CMHT. The post holder will have medical responsibility for those patients seen by himself/herself and for those patients seen by medical staff directly supervised by the post holder. The consultant will be expected to provide direct clinical care, ensure medical involvement in the CPA process, and implement MHA processes in the CMHT, as required. The post holder will work alongside the rest of the senior staff in the CMHT to ensure the effective functioning and development of the service. The Consultant will provide direct clinical supervision and line management to any trainees and specialty doctors for whom he/she is the identified clinical supervisor. This will include one hour per week of clinical supervision for trainees and an agreed level of supervision to speciality doctors. He/she will also be expected to provide clinical supervision to other trainees in the team as required. The Consultant will provide timely written correspondence to relevant professionals, including GP colleagues, and will document clinical assessments, ongoing management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records systems. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Medical Degree Fully registered with license to practice with the General Medical Council Being on the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview). Eligible for Approved Clinician status under the MHA Desirable criteria A higher degree such as MD or PhD Additional clinical qualifications Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Being on the GMC Specialist Register in Old Age Psychiatry Experience Essential criteria Experience of clinical work in old age psychiatry at SpR, SAS/Specialist grade or consultant level within the last 3 years Desirable criteria Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health Experience of working at consultant level in an outpatient environment Knowledge Essential criteria Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry Skills Essential criteria Leadership skills Commitment to fostering a culture in the team that is respectful, fair, supportive and compassionate and role modelling these behaviours. Ability to manage complex workloads, clinical complexity and uncertainty, and support others to do that Consultation skills to services, teams and individuals Commitment to working in multidisciplinary setting Clinical skills in old age psychiatry Ability to work in multi-disciplinary team and provide clinical leadership to the team Expertise in risk assessment Confident in therapeutic risk taking Commitment to clinical governance Desirable criteria Formal leadership and management training Experience of team /service leadership Experience of organisational development work Project management ability Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post Experience in supervising resident doctors and SAS doctors Experience in supervising non-medical colleagues Teaching Essential criteria Good teaching and communication skills Experience of teaching medical and non-medical colleagues Desirable criteria Medical education qualification Research Essential criteria Experience of research work and/or ability to interpret research findings and apply them to clinical practice.
