Job Summary Applications are invited for a Consultant Paediatric Urologist to join the Department of Paediatric Surgery and Urology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This is a locum post initially, but will become a substantive post in the future. Birmingham Children’s Hospital is part of Birmingham Women & Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital serves a population of over 5 million and provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary services. It is a designated Paediatric Major Trauma centre. The Paediatric Urology service covers paediatric urology and general paediatric surgery, including minimally invasive paediatric urology, reconstructive urology, management of neuropathic bladder, endourology including stone management, and the DSD MDT. It is one of the busiest paediatric urology units in the UK. Responsibilities Provide service covering all areas of paediatric urology practice except Bladder Exstrophy / Epispadias. Provide a separate paediatric urology on‑call service to paediatric surgeons. Lead the paediatric urology department consisting of 13 consultant surgeons, 13 tier 2 clinicians, 3 clinical nurses specialist teams and 3 physician associates. Perform elective and emergency surgical procedures, including advanced laparoscopy. Manage full range of paediatric urological cases and take full responsibility for clinical care of patients. Lead on‑call commitments and supervise residents and registrars. Participate in audit, research and teaching activities. Qualifications & Eligibility Essential: FRCS(Paed) or equivalent (e.g. FRCS (Urol) or overseas equivalent). Recognised Post CCT Fellowship in Paediatric Urology. Passed CCT level. At least 1 year post‑CCT fellowship in Paediatric Urology. Desirable: MD, PhD, MSc or equivalent. Consultant experience within the UK. Consultant Paediatric Urology on‑call experience within the UK. Current APLS or equivalent. Definitive Trauma surgical skills course or equivalent. Evidence of membership of specialist organisations, e.g. IPSO, SIOP‑RTSG, ChUGS. Special Knowledge, Skills and Experience Essential: Ability to manage full range of paediatric urological cases. Ability to take full responsibility for the clinical care of patients. Able to operate independently. Advanced laparoscopy experience. Logbook and portfolio available. Ability to complete busy surgical on‑call commitments. Experience of resident doctor supervision. Desirable: Consultant experience within the UK. Consultant Paediatric Urology on‑call experience within the UK. Current APLS or equivalent. Definitive Trauma surgical skills course or equivalent. Evidence of membership of specialist organisations. Research and audit activity. Clinical trials experience as associate PI/sub‑PI/PI/CI. Grant funding achievements. In‑vitro / in‑vivo / ex‑vivo research experience. Personal Qualities & Disposition Essential: Co‑operative. Good at shared care. Good team member. Leadership qualities. Good communication skills. Desirable: Pleasant and cheerful. Teaching & Research Essential: Experience supervising registrars and equivalent. Ability to teach operative and clinical skills. Has undertaken audit and completed an audit cycle. Evidence of research activity and presentations. Desirable: Ability to supervise and take part in research / audit. Train the trainer qualification. Clinical trials experience as associate PI/sub‑PI/PI/CI. Evidence of achieving grant funding. In‑vitro/in‑vivo/ex‑vivo research experience.
