Closing Date: 11 Janaury 2026 The Role Newcastle Law School seeks to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Law to join our forward thinking, inclusive Russell Group Law School that seeks to embed its values in all that it does: Challenge; Social Justice; Compassion; Wellbeing; Excellence; Responsibility; and Respect. We are looking for a passionate researcher and educator in the area of Information Technology and or Data Law. Your research should engage with socially relevant and important questions that address current and future problems. A willingness to collaborate across legal fields and disciplines is also desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including on the LLM in Emerging Technologies and the Law. Ability to contribute to the delivery of at least one of the foundational legal knowledge subjects is essential. If you would like a confidential discussion about this role please contact Samantha Ryan, Head of Newcastle Law School at samantha.ryan@newcastle.ac.uk Interviews are expected to be held week commencing 23rd Febraury 2026 Key Accountabilities Teaching & Learning To provide high quality research led teaching activity To supervise dissertation students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with university standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks Contribute to curriculum and programme development as required Research Conduct research that demonstrates (or demonstrates the potential for) international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour (REF 3* & 4*) (commensurate with experience) Contribute to the research profile of Newcastle Law School by publishing high quality outputs, engaging with the Law & Futures research group as well as with relevant Newcastle University Centres of Research Excellence (NUCoREs) Pursue external funding commensurate with experience Potential to demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engage with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students (commensurate with experience) Other Operate as an active and collegial citizen in the Newcastle Law School community Have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an understanding of how individual behaviour can contribute to a positive research and education culture Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, research, engagement and/or student experience Take responsibility for a defined citizenship or leadership role (commensurate with experience) Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees Ability and skill to develop sustained relationships, including with internal colleagues, external partners and organisations In addition, for Senior Lecturer Grade H: As a senior colleague, make a positive citizenship contribution to the Newcastle Law School community by providing academic leadership to colleagues and students To have responsibility for the design, development, implementation and/or administration of programmes of study Attract as well as supervise PGR students The Person (Essential) The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification as outlined below. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Ability to teach information technology and or data law as well as contribute to the teaching of at least one of the foundational legal knowledge subjects Evidence or the potential to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students Ability to deliver research-led teaching, making effective use of technology to enhance learning Ability to develop and secure research funding Experience of or capability to publish international and world-leading research Evidence of a developing national/international research profile Evidence of ability to contribute to the research community of the Law School Ability to supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects Commitment to interdisciplinary working (Desirable) Excellent written and oral communication skills Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills Demonstration of successful team working Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion Personal resilience, able to work well in a challenging sector, sometimes managing conflicting priorities In addition to the criteria above, to be considered for a Grade G Lectureship you must also meet the following criteria: A sustained national research profile and evidence of an established/developing international research profile Evidence of developing and securing grant capture (desirable) Evidence of engaging with external stakeholders, demonstrating potential for generating real-world impact from research (desirable) Experience of attracting and supervising PGR students (desirable) Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects Substantial experience of designing and delivering high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities for students Evidence of active academic citizenship such as experience in an administrative role that supported teaching, research, engagement or student experience Evidence of sustained teaching in the field of information technology or data law broadly defined In addition to meeting the criteria for the Lecturer Grade F/G to be considered for a Grade H Senior Lectureship you must also meet the following criteria: Evidence of experience of leading and delivering holistic, integrated programme-level design of learning, teaching and assessment strategies, to deliver learning opportunities that engage, challenge and inspire our students Evidence of a sustained international research profile and proven track record in international and world-leading publications Evidence of a research trajectory that delivers impact and/or successfully engages with the relevant funding opportunities Evidence of skills in organisation and leadership necessary for undertaking a management and leadership role in the School Personal resilience, able to work well in a challenging sector, sometimes managing conflicting priorities Qualifications PhD at or near completion (strictly within three months of submission at time of application) in a relevant subject A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area (Desirable) HE teaching qualification (Desirable) In addition to meeting the criteria for the Lecturer Grade F candidates must also meet the following criteria: Completed PhD in a relevant subject HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience) #Lawgrowth Newcastle University is a global University where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
