Operations Engineer – Wastewater

As part of the operations team, this role ensures that operational, maintenance and construction methods are undertaken to allow ESPUG to adopt, operate and maintain Wastewater networks safely, compliantly, and efficiently. ESPUG’s success depends on maintaining relationships with customers, developers, contractors and service providers for the construction, maintenance and operation of our Wastewater assets. Role Purpose The primary objective is to manage and oversee day-to-day activities relating to the construction, operation and maintenance of ESPUG’s Wastewater networks, ensuring that industry and ESPUG standards are complied with. Building close relationships with ESPUG’s portfolio of developers and their appointed groundworkers ensures quality of construction and service provision. The successful candidate will likely be home‑based but will require regular visits to sites that are adopted or in construction. Key Responsibilities Act as technical expert within the operations team for ensuring wastewater assets are constructed in line with ESPUG’s specification and operational policies and procedures. Offer technical support during the onboarding of new customers, ensuring existing customers have required competencies and accreditations. Ensure that customers and service providers are safe, competent, accredited and regularly audited against ESP policy & procedures and industry guidance. Regularly brief customers on changing water industry construction requirements and ESP policies & procedures through demonstrations of in-depth operational experience. Engage in regular technical and compliance discussions with customers to support delivery of safe, compliant and efficient networks. Undertake inspection of assets under construction, pre- and post-commissioning (including any pre-construction activities as required) to ensure safe, compliant and efficient networks are adopted by ESP. Assist in developing ESPUG’s Wastewater asset maintenance programme and that service providers produce safe, compliant and efficient service. Provide support to customers during construction and adoption, offering value engineering solutions of wastewater networks that support safe, efficient, and compliant construction, operation and maintenance in accordance with ESP’s standards, industry standards and legislation. Undertake interventions where required with incumbent water companies that release or resolve delays with the associated design or construction of ESPUG assets. Participate in the OOH standby rota across all ESP utility sectors. Key Skills Significant experience in the wastewater distribution sector with knowledge of design, delivery, installation, operation and maintenance. Preference for experience within a water company developer services role or developer/sewer construction company. Knowledge of selection and procurement of materials for wastewater distribution networks, and selection and management of contractors and construction partners. Excellent relationship‑management skills across the business, with customers, consumers and service providers, influencing behaviours and outcomes. Clarity, accuracy and attention to detail. Strong organisational skills. An innovative approach to problem‑solving. An ability to adopt a wider perspective beyond the immediate bounds of the job description.
