Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry Position ID: 106600 / 106601 Position Details Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full‑time, Permanent Salary: £71,694 – £145,478 Closing date: 8th January 2026 Employment type: Full‑time Seniority level: Mid‑Senior level Job function: Research and Other; Industries: Higher Education Role Summary The University of Birmingham is seeking an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry or a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry to work within the newly established Intellectual Disabilities Research Institute (IDRIS). In collaboration with Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, the successful candidate will undertake clinical duties within the NHS as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, ideally aligned with research interests. The role requires significant academic leadership, research and education expertise that complements IDRIS’s research priorities, and a commitment to inclusive practice. Responsibilities Provide clinical work as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist – three days per week within a community learning disabilities team at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust. Engage in academic leadership, including mentoring PhD students and research staff, and contributing to the growth of the IDRIS research programme. Develop and lead multidisciplinary research projects focused on intellectual disabilities. Share the School’s values of criticality, interdisciplinarity, collaboration and engagement, fostering an inclusive environment. Act as a role model for academic citizenship and actively improve research culture, especially around inclusion. Qualifications Full registration with the GMC and a license to practice. Certificate of Completion of Training in the Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities or already listed on the specialist register. Significant track record of achievement appropriate to the appointed grade. Experience leading and/or developing multidisciplinary teams (desirable). Strong research and educational record that aligns with IDRIS’s priorities. Additional Requirements All successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Occupational Health and/or DBS clearance prior to appointment.
