Applications are invited for the position of Trust Grade Registrar in Emergency Medicine at the University Hospitals of North Tees and Hartlepool. Applicants should be fully registered with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice and have formal training up to CT3 Emergency Medicine / RCEM Intermediate EM training or equivalent in the UK, USA or Australasia Emergency Care System. This should include 5 years post registration and 1 year experience as middle grade with a supervisory role (supervising junior doctors). Applicants must possess a broad range of skills and experience required to work within a busy Emergency Department. Requirements General Medical Council registration with licence to practice. Training up to CT3 Emergency Medicine or equivalent. Minimum 5 years post registration, 1 year supervisory experience. Broad skill set for busy ED environment. Working Hours & Rota Rolling rota: one weekend in three; 1 week of nights (non‑continuous) in nine weeks. At least 6 clinicians on duty overnight (one specialist doctor/senior trainee plus a mixture of trust doctors, residents, Advanced Clinical Practitioners or Physician Associates). Average 4 hours per week of protected Self Development Time. Average weekly hours about 40. Further information regarding the working of the rota is available by contacting Dr I Cardona. Administrative Responsibilities Ensure accurate, timely and comprehensive completion of patient records, discharge summaries and referrals in accordance with hospital policies. Contribute to the collection, analysis and reporting of departmental data to support performance monitoring and service planning. Clinical Responsibilities Reception, examination and treatment of ED patients. Engage with Junior and Senior Teaching Programme and QI departmental activity. Close liaison with GP’s, Local Authority Social Services staff, Health Visitors, Community nursing services and other relevant services for patients requiring ongoing community care. Management & Leadership Responsibilities Run the Emergency Department as sole Senior Decision Maker at night from midnight to 8 am and support coordination alongside the Emergency Nurse In Charge, providing clinical leadership in the consultant’s absence overnight. Policy & Service Development Participate in forming, reviewing and implementing hospital policies, guidelines and clinical protocols. Identify areas for improvement in patient care, safety and workflow. Engage in clinical governance activities, including incident review, risk management and compliance with safety and quality standards. Research & Audit Responsibilities Support external research projects; the ED has a dedicated Research Nurse working part time, and the appointee will have opportunities to undertake relevant training and support ongoing research projects. Participate in departmental Quality Improvement Projects and Audits coordinated by a departmental lead. Managing Resources Responsibilities Ensure effective and efficient use of medical equipment, diagnostic services and treatment space to support timely, high‑quality patient care. Collaborate with nursing and allied health professional teams to allocate personnel according to acuity, workload and departmental needs. Education & Training Mentoring is encouraged at all levels; new appointees receive an Educational Supervisor for training and professional development. Senior support from Dr Ignacio Cardona (Specialty Tutor) and a Trust SASG Tutor for career guidance. Comprehensive education programme for junior doctors on Thursday afternoons; local middle‑grade teaching every fortnight on Tuesday afternoons. Directorate hosts third‑year, SSC and final‑year medical students; participants are expected to contribute to teaching and ‘shop‑floor’ training. Study leave available at the discretion of the Directorate Management Team, subject to service exigencies.
