Job Purpose To create and promote a conducive learning environment that optimises the safe delivery of enhanced nursing care to patients requiring orthopaedic and musculoskeletal care. To facilitate best practice and evidence‑based knowledge and skill development for staff to optimise the highest quality safe nursing care in the clinical area, and to optimise patients and families’ experiences of care. Clinical Responsibilities Facilitate staff training and ensure compliance with Basic Life Support and Immediate Life Support. Promote and enable delivery of high standards of care by supporting individual staff in developing clinical knowledge and skills that assure safe enhanced nursing care. Deliver evidence‑based clinical nursing skills; assess competence when nurses acquire new skills and provide feedback and personalised support. Monitor and review clinical practice and professional standards through benchmarking and auditing. Identify and respond to changes in protocols, pathways, guidelines and policies. Maintain enhanced nursing care educational records for all staff, including competencies and feedback. Coordinate a robust induction programme for new starters and maintain records for all substantive and temporary staff. Support nursing students and their supervisors/assessors within clinical placement areas. Facilitate developmental opportunities for newly registered nurses to achieve competency and maintain portfolios of practice. Help monitor and report staff performance; institute remedial action planning where necessary. Maintain a visible presence in the clinical area, spending at least 80% of time working with staff at the bedside to assure delivery of high‑quality safe care. Supervise and monitor the quality of fundamentals of nursing care and documentation, ensuring EHR, Trust and NMC standards are met and implement audits of clinical documentation. Support the Clinical Nurse Educator with educational audits to ensure quality standards are maintained. Support staff in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care, actively seeking evidence‑based practice to achieve excellent clinical outcomes. Keep updated on current trends and developments in nursing and the NHS, promoting continuing professional development for self and colleagues. Identify clinical risks and take appropriate action under the supervision of the senior nurse manager, following the Trust Risk Management policy. Ensure adherence to infection control policies, addressing areas for improvement with the Infection Control and Prevention team, ward management and staff. Take personal responsibility for promoting a safe environment and safe patient care by identifying risk areas and following the Incident, Serious Incident and Near Miss reporting procedures. People and Resources Management Maintain effective communication with the multidisciplinary team and other wards/departments through formal presentation of relevant information. Promote the corporate image of the Trust to stakeholders and the community through representation at conferences and working groups. Assist with staff recruitment, retention and selection within the budgeted establishment. Coordinate structured orientation programmes for new staff, students, temporary staff and honorary visitors. Support practice supervisors and assessors to access relevant training and supervision, and assist in managing under‑performing staff/students, ensuring timely escalation and documentation. Facilitate staff personal and professional development plans, contributing to the Learning Needs Analysis and supporting staff in setting developmental aims and objectives. Take responsibility for own professional and personal development through research, innovation and attendance at suitable study days. Maintain active NMC registration, ensure regular performance review and appraisal, and negotiate personal and professional objectives with the line manager. Support and participate in staff appraisal and personal development in line with Trust policy. Support implementation of study days, team days and seminars relevant to the clinical area to enhance nursing skills. Act at all times to ensure personal practice complies with Trust and local policies, the NMC Code of Conduct, and facilitate other staff to do the same. Support ward management and deputise for them in their absence. Research and Service Development Ensure all team members have a voice in the development of the clinical area’s service. Collaborate and assist in conducting clinical audit and research, disseminating findings through role‑modelling, supervision, teaching and other communication methods. Support implementation of action plans to improve and maintain high standards of fundamental care and nursing documentation. Participate in the Trust Business Planning cycle, identifying areas of service development. Policy Development Actively contribute to projects related to local policy development. Be actively involved in developing Trust policies and procedures at ward level and facilitate their application in the clinical area.
