Job Title Consultant in Infection – DenialHost Date Posted 11 November 2025 Job Summary This is a new 10 PA post for a consultant microbiologist to join the existing team of four consultants (3.4 WTE), a Specialty Registrar (0.84 WTE) and a Junior Clinical Fellow (0.63 WTE). The appointment will support a 7‑day a week infection service at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. The infection team aims to optimise the prevention, diagnosis and management of infections. The role works closely with South Tyneside and Sunderland NHSFT and is part of joint working discussions with neighbouring Trusts. Responsibilities Provide a comprehensive 7‑day open‑access infection service to hospital, community and local primary care services. Support all elements of the laboratory and work with clinical and laboratory colleagues within and beyond the Trust. Contribute to inpatient consulting service and antibiotic stewardship initiatives. Lead or participate in clinical governance, audit and multidisciplinary teams. Support development of the infection service, including research, medical education and clinical leadership. Qualifications Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council, including a licence to practise, or eligibility for registration within six months. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Microbiology or dual CCT in Microbiology/Infectious Diseases by the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee. FRCPath or equivalent professional qualification. Experience in infection management and a high standard of clinical skill, with the ability to offer expert opinions on a range of infection problems in emergency, elective and primary care settings. Person Specification – Experience & Skills Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the relevant specialty. Commitment to audit, teaching and continuous professional development. Ability to teach and supervise a wide variety of healthcare staff.
