Responsibilities Carry out analysis and basic reporting in accordance with standard operating procedures for a designated team as appropriate for experience and skills (e.g. microarray, core diseases, cancer). Assist in the maintenance, preparation and review of standard operating procedures. Comply with health and safety policies. Receiving samples: Responsible for determining if referrals are appropriate for the laboratory to process based on the referral information, sample type, testing repertoire and methods. The ability to reach an overarching understanding of the lab processes and scientific rationale behind them is essential. Processing samples: Use the EPIC laboratory information management system (LIMS). Monitor the generic laboratory duty scientist email address and triage enquiries accordingly. Effectively communicate information to users using appropriate scientific language to efficiently communicate clinically or scientifically relevant details. Contribute as required to basic analysis and reporting of patient results for a designated team. Job Overview We are seeking a proactive individual to join the Rare and Inherited Disease Genomics Laboratory at Great Ormond Street Hospital as a Scientific Support Technologist. They will provide a highly professional, comprehensive, and efficient scientific support service to our scientific teams. Depending on current skills and experience, they will also undertake analytical and reporting work as required in the support of a genomic testing service for one of our scientific teams. They will contribute to the smooth running of the North Thames Rare Disease Laboratory; genetic knowledge and hands‑on experience in an accredited diagnostic setting will be an advantage. Good communication skills and attention to detail are essential. The Rare Disease Laboratory has an establishment of approximately 140 including technologists, clinical scientists, translational scientists, bioinformaticians and administrative support staff. Along with two Clinical Genetics teams we form a strategic Genetics Unit within the hospital and provide North London with a Regional Genetics Service serving a population of approximately 10 million. The genetics laboratory provides an in‑house diagnostic service for cancer, molecular genetic and cytogenetic testing in accordance with the NHS England Genomic Test Directory.
