Theatre Consultant – Charcoalblue We are seeking a Theatre Consultant with a Stage Engineering Focus to join our global Theatre Consultancy team in the UK. You will be responsible for all aspects of design, documentation and commissioning stage engineering on our projects, working in partnership with team leads, theatre designers, stage equipment designers, experience designers and acousticians to deliver holistic, bespoke design solutions. If you have prior experience with theatre and/or presentation technical systems and/or broadcast and media technology, either as a practitioner, system designer, team leader or project manager, you will be a strong fit. You will report to one of our Associate Directors, with project assignments and workload managed by your line manager. We provide role‑specific inductions, ongoing training and regular support to help you succeed. Key Responsibilities Provide general support for projects; assist with the production of drawings, specifications and reports, and support senior team members researching new products. Draw stage engineering systems, mechanical, electrical and manual, from concept design to detailed specification (Revit & AutoCAD). Deliver work to the highest standards, following Charcoalblue’s quality assurance processes, ensuring full compliance with relevant legislation, guidance and good practice. Problem‑solve – find bespoke, creative and innovative solutions to particular project challenges. Meet with clients to evaluate their needs for a project as they relate to stage engineering systems design. Work with our internal design team to present a holistic design solution that balances performance functionality and budget. Describe the functionality and purpose of stage engineering systems while adjusting communication styles for different audiences. Collaborate with architectural and engineering teams to include all required infrastructure and dependencies for stage engineering systems. Provide cost projections throughout a project for stage engineering systems integration, working with manufacturers and distributors to sense‑check designs. Participate in design team meetings and coordination workshops online and in person. Participate in site visits for commissioning, testing, construction progress and other purposes. Occasional travel, including international/overseas travel, may be required. Contribute to the continual development of internal design and technical resources through collaboration and knowledge sharing. Qualifications, Key Skills & Employment Details Essential Minimum three years’ experience in a technical engineering role, likely in the performing arts and architecture. Background in mechanical or structural engineering, or practical and design experience of stage engineering systems. Experience designing or operating manual‑powered flying systems and automated stage engineering systems. Proficiency in AutoCAD, REVIT or similar software; familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and/or Bluebeam. Desirable Familiarity with Microsoft Office products. Experience in the performing arts, live entertainment and/or construction or mechanical engineering industry. Skill in graphic design and layout, graphical display of information, and corporate branding. Knowledge of theatre and live performance building construction. Excellent communication skills – verbal, written, sketch, technical drawing and formal presentations. Ability to plan and organise work effectively, delivering agreed outcomes on time. Experience creating contract documentation for stage engineering systems on new construction or renovation projects in the UK and/or EMEA. Experience working with a global team across different time zones. Higher education qualification or completion of a Technical Theatre course at a Drama School, College or University. Practical knowledge of Theatre Health & Safety practice and relevant health & safety and electrical regulations. Passion for theatre, live performance, broadcast and/or events. Interpersonal Skills Strong organisational and time‑management skills. Meticulous attention to detail, producing accurate work. Clear and confident communication in writing and speaking. Comfortable managing multiple responsibilities with support when needed. Maintaining focus and healthy coping strategies during busy periods. Approachable and respectful when working with others. Confident working independently and collaboratively within local and global teams. Open to learning and adapting to evolving business needs. Prioritising tasks and balancing a varied workload. Meeting agreed deadlines while caring for personal well‑being. Managing basic budgeting and finance‑related tasks where required.
