Principal Engineer - BridgesWSP in the UK & Ireland – Exeter officeJoin to apply for the Principal Engineer - Bridges role at WSP in the UK & Ireland.We are looking for a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer with experience in bridges to support our local authority clients within the Southwest and to work on a varied programme of design, assessment and inspection schemes.ResponsibilitiesDesigning new and replacement bridges and retaining walls, and inspecting, assessing, repairing and strengthening existing structures (ranging from masonry arches and stonework retaining walls to modern moving structures).Taking projects through their entire life cycle from inception to construction.Managing a portfolio of schemes as Technical Lead and Project Manager, including inspection, assessment, feasibility, detailed design, procurement, site supervision and construction.Working with clients and design teams to deliver compliant designs on time and within budget, meeting H&S, CDM, QA and technical review requirements.Preparing and reviewing reports, calculations, drawings, schedules, health and safety risk assessments, feasibility studies and other documents in accordance with local and national procedures and guidance.Collaborating with team members to identify and resolve technical and commercial issues.Writing proposals for new schemes, including cost estimates, and managing the commercial position on projects.Coordinating and communicating with multi-disciplinary teams from across the UK and internationally, as well as Clients and stakeholders, to deliver projects.Undertaking site work for construction supervision, surveys and inspections.Line management duties and supporting the development of junior team members.What We Will Be Looking For You To DemonstrateChartered Civil or Structural Engineer with practical knowledge and experience of bridge design, maintenance, strengthening, assessment, inspection and supervision from both construction sites and the design office.Experience in project management of bridge projects and working knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) related to structural schemes.Understanding and experience of Eurocodes and their application to bridge design.Experience in the design and assessment of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge structures and masonry arch structures.Experience with grillage, space frame and finite element analysis software packages.Effective communicator who can convey perspectives clearly and keep stakeholders and colleagues informed.A passion for projects that make a real difference to local communities and a mature, safe-working approach.What We OfferWork-life balance with hybrid working policy (flexibility to work from home two days a week and in modern offices across the UK).Inclusivity and belonging, with support for diverse backgrounds and a culture of integrity and respect.Health & wellbeing support, including Thrive programme, Virtual GP service, workplace adjustments, gym benefits, and menopause support package.Flexibility with time, part-time or flexible working arrangements, and additional leave options.Development opportunities, mentoring, and support toward Chartership.We encourage applications from suitably qualified candidates and welcome conversations about alignment to other roles within the team.About UsWSP is a leading engineering and professional services firm with a global network and strong local presence in the UK & Ireland.
