Staff Chief Engineer for cruise vessel Vasco Da Gama Department: Engine Employment Type: Contract Location: Shipboard Description We are looking for experienced Staff Chief Engineer, ready to join cruise vessel Vasco Da Gama, embarkation at the end of January 2026, contract 3 months on/off, required good experience as such, all valid Certificates, good references/recommendations. Position Summary Assists the Chief Engineer in all technical, mechanical, electrical and environmental matters. Ensures that all systems and equipment of every sub division of the technical department are operating correctly and are maintained to the highest possible standards in order to support the safe navigation of the ship. That all are in accordance with Company Policies, any National or International standards and in compliance with Public Health or any other prescribed regulations. Ensures proper coordination and cooperation with different technical parties and departments. Reporting Structure Reporting to the Chief Engineer. Subordinates – Engine Officers and ratings. Safety Duties Participates in crew safety drills according to instructions. Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures. Lead by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others. Ensuring that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly. Delivering training, guidance and supervision on how to use and maintain them where necessary. Education/Experience/Qualifications Valid STCW95 certification. Valid CoC A-III/2. Appropriate certification as required by regulations. Extensive experience as a Staff Engineer is essential. Must have a strong ability to detect and identify the cause of machinery faults. Physically and medically fit. Moral integrity is required. Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses. Alaska experience is a plus. Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience. Language requirements Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial. Computer knowledge Good knowledge of AMOS, and Microsoft Office applications. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Required to stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in the Engine Control Room, Engine spaces with noise, light traffic, distracting environments as well as an office environment. Key Responsibilities Responsible to lead the safe and effective operation and maintenance to the highest possible standards of all main, auxiliary and domestic machinery and technical equipment. Responsible for the safe and efficient repair and maintenance of the main propulsion machinery and associated machinery and equipment. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation, repair and maintenance of the following (to include but not limited to): Main propulsion machinery and associated machinery and equipment. Diesel Generators and associated machinery and equipment. Black and Grey water system. Boilers and steam plant. Oily water separator. Separators. Compressors. Evaporators. Deck machinery. Garbage management equipment. Life Boats and Tender Engines and propulsion system. Chlorine dosing equipment for fresh water and potable water system. Emergency D/Generator maintenance and test. Dead Ship Recovery Generator (CLIA) maintenance and test. Water Tight Doors and Semi-Watertight Doors hydraulic system. Fire sliding door pneumatic system. Fire Extinguishing Water pipeline and valves. Incinerator, food waste and garbage equipment system. Swimming pool and Jacuzzi machinery. Mechanical hotel equipment and services, plumbing etc. Air conditioning. Thrusters. Stabilisers. Emergency diesel engines and related equipment. Steering and rudder machinery, whistles and bilge cleanliness. Fresh/sea water and potable water distribution services. Must be fully knowledgeable of the Chief Engineers responsibilities and must be able to assume the position of the Chief Engineer should the need arise. Ensures that the maintenance programs for the engine department are implemented and followed in a timely manner according to Company policies. Responsible to know the handling characteristics of the vessel, including stopping distance. Has full knowledge of every aspect of safety features of the vessel. Being fully conversant with the Company’s VMS. Responsible to be familiar with the operation and location of all lifesaving, fire-fighting and pollution prevention equipment. Ensures that inspections, maintenance and testing of environmental systems are always carried out according to Company policies, National, International or any other prescribed regulations. Assists the Chief Engineer in overseeing all bunkering operations. Issues work permits for the engine department. Monitors training for the engine department. Responsible for inspections of tanks and compartments. Attends arrival and departure maneuvering. Ensures sufficient stock of spare parts and consumables is on order and in the onboard system to cover planned and unplanned maintenance. Works in close coalition with the Safety Officer to ensure proper maintenance and mechanical conditions of all safety equipment and systems onboard. Ensures seaworthiness of the vessel in the engine department. Keeps the vessel in a good state of repair all equipment and systems to ensure a complete readiness to meet any emergency requirements. Monitors technical performance of the vessel. Overseeing and ensuring safe, effective maintenance and repair procedures. Responsible to oversee entries made and maintaining a correct and up to date Engine log book, technical or waste related logbooks, including the Oil Record Book, Waste waters discharge, Ozone Depleting Substances, Oil to Sea Interfaces, Marine Fuel Sulphur. Assigns duties to engine officers and ratings, assigns technical work to subordinates on a daily basis. Responsible to ensure all within the department are trained and familiar with their duties and can carry them out. Ensures that all engine personnel are trained with engine room alarm systems with special reference to the CO2 alarm. Participates in the development of onboard operational plans in accord with all technical, legislative, safety and procedural specifications, to support maintenance periods and works with Hotel Department for minimal impact on shipboard operation. Keeps the Chief Engineer promptly and fully informed of all problems and matters of significance. Ensuring that standards are maintained within the department and officers and ratings work according to their job descriptions, evaluating performance and development of the team and implementing corrective actions when standards are not upheld. Controls and approves overtime and working hours. Managing manpower by monitoring hours worked by each crew member and financial impact, ensuring all work/rest hours compliance with ILO and MLC, record keeping as standard. Executes strict practices to ensure engine room operation as per regulations and Canada policies though conditions, but accordance with international regulations. Ensures that standards are maintained within the department and officers and ratings work according to their job descriptions, evaluating performance and development of the team and implementing corrective actions when standards are not upheld. Observes and enforces uniform and grooming standards according to company policies. Establishes a climate of openness and trust with officers, working as part of the team to achieve results.
