Who we are HMRC helps to collect the money that pays for the UK’s public services and provides financial support to families and individuals, so our work impacts on the lives of millions of the country’s citizens. We employ lawyers, tax professionals, advocates, paralegals and administrators, and our strength is in the diversity and inclusivity of our supportive teams. Our Legal Group conducts litigation and provides advice on issues arising from HMRC’s work and handles a range of different areas of law including general public law, tax law, commercial law, insolvency law, information law and criminal law. The roles We currently have vacancies for Lawyers or Legal Officers (LO’s up to 1yr PQE) to join our advisory and litigation teams. You don’t need to have any knowledge of the work we do, or specialist understanding of tax-related matters – we’ll give you all the training and support you’ll need to develop your expertise, and the opportunity to move between teams as you build on your skills and experience. Join us as an Advisory Lawyer and you’ll give advice on the interpretation and application of public and administrative law. This includes advising Ministers on a wide variety of taxes and on other issues including welfare, insolvency, information law and international treaties. We implement policy through primary and secondary legislation, support colleagues at all stages of the parliamentary process, and draft a high volume of statutory instruments. Our Criminal Lawyers give advice and support to investigators and policy makers, supporting HMRC's tax enforcement activity in investigating serious complex fraud and other criminal non-compliance. As a Litigation Lawyer, you’ll work across the full range of HMRC work, including some of the most challenging, important, high value and complex Government litigations. These range from big money tax cases to civil cases against those who benefit from the proceeds of crime. We regularly litigate through the higher courts to the Supreme Court, and our work often involves novel and challenging points of law and makes an important contribution to the interpretation of the law. In the role of Commercial Lawyer, you’ll give advice on high value and complex public procurement and contractual commercial legal issues within government. This includes providing legal support to HMRC's largest transformation programmes including IT and Estates. You’ll support HMRC’s day-to-day banking and general commercial operations, including all aspects of commercial contracts, intellectual property rights, public procurement and state aid, contract and supplier management, and dispute resolution. About you To be a success in one of these roles you’ll need to have a minimum of a 2:1 in any subject in your first degree or its overseas equivalent, but we may consider your application if you have a lower degree and evidence of an equivalent high level academic or professional achievement. You should also be qualified as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, or that you will be qualified within 3 months from the date the advert closes, and must have passed SQE or completed a training contract/pupillage/qualifying employment or been exempted from this by the Law Society, the Bar Council or CILEx. Chartered Legal Executives must have a qualifying law degree or have completed the GDL/CPE or have passed exams at CILEx Level 6 in all the seven foundation subjects – these are contract law, criminal law, equity and trusts law, European Union Law, land law, public law and law of tort. If you’re qualified in a jurisdiction outside England and Wales, you’ll need to become qualified in England and Wales within two years of starting work with us, and your employment will be conditional upon this. We are holding a candidate information session on Teams for these roles on Monday 24th November between 12.30 and 2.00pm. Candidates will have the opportunity to hear from Lawyers working within the business, about what they do and their experiences working for government. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about the role.
